JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 Jasmine Mason, development assistant at the Women\u2019s Center of Jacksonville<\/a> and former victim advocate, knows the harsh realities of human trafficking. For three years, she answered crisis calls, provided resources, and stood beside survivors during their darkest moments.<\/p>\n

Now, alongside Lisa Chaloux, a trafficking survivor and program planner analyst with the University of South Florida, Jasmine continues to educate the public on what trafficking really looks like \u2014 and why it often goes unnoticed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHuman trafficking is a $250 billion criminal enterprise,\u201d Lisa explained. \u201cIt\u2019s not always the Hollywood version. Most victims aren\u2019t tied up. They\u2019re manipulated, coerced, and sometimes don\u2019t even know they\u2019re being trafficked.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Florida, the problem is acute. The state ranks third in trafficking cases nationwide \u2014 with Jacksonville ranked third within the state and first for demand.<\/p>\n

That demand drives what Lisa calls a \u201cbusiness model of exploitation,\u201d and the solution, she said, starts with collaboration. \u201cEvery NGO, law enforcement agency, and local government must work together. We can\u2019t just identify survivors \u2014 we have to support them afterward too.\u201d<\/p>\n

That support includes housing, relocation, trauma counseling, and employment assistance. But according to Jasmine, every survivor\u2019s path is unique. \u201cWe don\u2019t force labels. Some people come in for help without realizing what they\u2019ve survived.\u201d<\/p>\n

Advocates stress that trafficking isn\u2019t always visible \u2014 and often hides behind emotional, financial, or psychological abuse. It can look like a toxic relationship, or in some cases, simply a job that never pays.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to look beyond the surface,\u201d Lisa added. \u201cMany survivors carry shame and criminal records for things they were forced into. We need to meet them without judgment \u2014 just support.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Women\u2019s Center of Jacksonville works with hospitals, jails, and the general public to spread awareness and offer critical services. They encourage anyone who sees something suspicious \u2014 or feels something is off \u2014 to ask questions, stay curious, and offer resources.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re in a situation like this, it\u2019s not your fault,\u201d Jasmine said. \u201cYou\u2019re not alone. There\u2019s a whole community here waiting to help.\u201d<\/p>\n
