But after Monday\u2019s mass shooting in Midtown, Manhattan, gun safety advocates acknowledge those regulations can only accomplish so much when other states have more relaxed gun laws.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The shooting, where a gunman from Nevada drove across the country to New York City before opening fire and killing four in an office building, has sparked renewed calls from Democrats for new nationwide gun regulations.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Kathy Hochul, <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/inside-city-hall\/2025\/07\/30\/more-states-should-adopt-n-y--gun-laws--hochul-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">during an appearance on Spectrum News NY1\u2019s Inside City Hall <\/a>Wednesday, touted New York\u2019s laws as a potential example for other states and the nation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve banned assault weapons. There&#8217;s no high-capacity magazines,\u201d she said, before adding that as long as other states do not have those regulations \u201cand someone can cross our state lines by simply getting into a vehicle, we are not safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>What You Need To Know<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>After Monday\u2019s mass shooting in Midtown, Manhattan, gun safety advocates acknowledge those regulations can only accomplish so much when other states have more relaxed gun laws and a determined gunman can cross state lines<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/giffords.org\/lawcenter\/resources\/scorecard\/?scorecard=NY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Giffords Law Center ranks<\/a>\u00a0New York as having the fourth strongest gun laws in the nation, touting its universal background checks, red flag law and age restrictions, among other regulations<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>The shooting has prompted calls from Democrats for new gun regulations at the federal level.\u00a0Gov. Kathy Hochul touted New York\u2019s laws as a potential example for other states and the nation<\/li>\n<li>In an interview with Spectrum News, one gun rights advocate dismissed calls for new gun regulations in light of the Manhattan mass shooting, calling instead for more funding for mental health<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Congressman Ritchie Torres, a Democrat representing the Bronx, said New York \u201chas to live with the consequences of the lax gun laws from other states. It\u2019s unfair. It feels like we\u2019ve been stripped of control of our own destiny.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As it stands currently, America is a patchwork of gun laws: 50 different states, 50 different sets of regulations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Organizations that advocate for tough gun regulations rank New York among the states with the toughest gun laws. The <a href=\"https:\/\/giffords.org\/lawcenter\/resources\/scorecard\/?scorecard=NY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Giffords Law Center lists<\/a> New York fourth in the nation, touting its universal background checks, red flag law and age restrictions, among other regulations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Those laws are credited with helping New York have one of the lowest rates of gun deaths per capita of any state, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealth.jhu.edu\/center-for-gun-violence-solutions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">an analysis by the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/gun-death-rates-by-state-ranked-highest-to-lowest-2023-center-for-gun-violence-solutions-johns-hopki.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"hashed-image image\" img-data-alignment=\"center\" img-data-width=\"percent-hundred\" loading=\"lazy\" img-data-caption=\"(Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions)\" img-data-wrap-text=\"true\" img-data-editing=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>(Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions)<\/p>\n<p>However, analysts say, strong state gun laws only accomplish so much if there is a void at the federal level \u2014\u00a0especially if a determined gunman chooses to cross state lines.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you have a neighboring state or a state across the country that has weaker gun laws, you can&#8217;t help but be affected by those things,\u201d Joshua Horwitz, co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Nevada, they&#8217;ve really changed their gun laws a lot in the last couple of years, but it&#8217;s not like New York&#8217;s law, right? In Nevada, it\u2019s much easier to get a concealed carry license. They don&#8217;t have an assault weapons ban,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Spectrum News, one gun rights advocate dismissed calls for new gun regulations in light of the Manhattan mass shooting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only thing regulation-wise that could have prevented Monday is there needs to be more public funding for mental health. The United States clearly has a mental health crisis, and as a society, we sweep it under the rug,\u201d Luis Valdes with Gun Owners of America said. \u201cBut in terms of gun control, nothing would have stopped it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gun reform advocates admit that getting new gun restrictions passed at the federal level is unlikely while Republicans control Congress and the White House.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In February, President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/02\/protecting-second-amendment-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">signed an executive order<\/a> directing the Attorney General to review and eliminate policies seen as infringing on Second Amendment rights.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"New York has some of the toughest gun laws in the country.
