{"id":106344,"date":"2025-07-31T01:57:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-31T01:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/106344\/"},"modified":"2025-07-31T01:57:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-31T01:57:09","slug":"amazon-updates-code-to-keep-out-google-ai-shopping-tools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/106344\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon Updates Code to Keep Out Google AI Shopping Tools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon<\/a> is reportedly taking steps to block other companies\u2019 artificial intelligence shopping tools from its website.<\/p>\n<p>The eCommerce giant updated the code on its site to include language that keeps out new AI agents from <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google<\/a>, The Information <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/amazon-locks-googles-ai-shopping-agents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> Wednesday (July 30).<\/p>\n<p>Amazon has taken similar precautions with bots from companies like <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.perplexity.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Perplexity<\/a>, <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anthropic<\/a> and <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenAI<\/a>, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>It appears as if Amazon is preventing its products from even showing up in some search results for outside chatbots and search tools, according to the report. A search for Amazon products using Perplexity and ChatGPT turned up results from other retailers but did not directly point to listings on Amazon, the report said. (A similar attempt by PYMNTS offered the same results.)<\/p>\n<p>Amazon did not reply to PYMNTS\u2019 request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>These policies are an \u201cextreme example\u201d of how retailers are weighing precautions against other companies\u2019 AI tools, the report said. <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shopify.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shopify<\/a> has taken a narrower focus, while <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walmart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Walmart<\/a>\u2019s approach is more wait-and-see.<\/p>\n<p>If AI tools, such as chatbots and searches that provide product recommendations, or AI-powered personal shoppers become more popular, retailers could find fewer people directly browsing their sites, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe product discovery funnel is going to collapse as a result of consumers integrating AI into their shopping experience,\u201d said <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/michael-morton-98a1272b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Morton<\/a>, senior analyst at <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moffettnathanson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MoffettNathanson<\/a>, per the report. \u201cEveryone who has been positioned to make money along the way of that discovery is going to see their business model change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PYMNTS CEO Karen Webster explored the topic earlier this year, writing that retailers could soon \u201cfind themselves caught in the proverbial <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2025\/when-chatbots-replace-search-bars-who-wins-at-checkout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chatbot<\/a> crossfire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With AI agents increasingly handling the search and presentation of results (or completed sales), traditional retailers risk losing their visibility in the commerce ecosystem entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Amazon and Walmart are attempting to protect their \u201c<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/retail\/2025\/amazon-and-walmart-arent-surfing-retail-techs-tidal-wave-theyre-driving-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retail soft spots<\/a>\u201d with the help of AI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe latest strategic maneuvers from both companies \u2026 reflect not just tactical business decisions but signal a structural transformation of what it means to be a modern retailer in the 21st century,\u201d PYMNTS reported June 12.<\/p>\n<p>For all PYMNTS AI coverage, subscribe to the daily <a href=\"https:\/\/pymnts.com\/subscribe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI Newsletter<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Amazon is reportedly taking steps to block other companies\u2019 artificial intelligence shopping tools from its website.
