I keep telling myself I can do anything for two minutes. That\u2019s as long as I have to endure each of the 20 performance-related exercises at Legacy, an interval training gym in Little River, Miami.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">My workout partner isn\u2019t an NFL athlete, but she had the intensity of one\u2014and Legacy is known for attracting current and former ballers. Nine-time Pro Bowler Julius Peppers. Shutdown cornerback Joe Haden. Former Miami Dolphins defensive end Olivier Vernon. And\u2014here\u2019s the unique part\u2014on any given day at <a href=\"https:\/\/legacyfit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/legacyfit.com\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Legacy\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Legacy<\/a> you might actually train with one of the many NFL and college football athletes who take the gyms classes.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Yes, the thought is both inspiring and intimidating, but right now, my arms are shaking and my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a64828327\/core-strength-workout-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a64828327\/core-strength-workout-plan\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"core\" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">core<\/a> is tight and I don\u2019t know if I can handle the fact that my much more athletic workout buddy has added ten more pounds to my load. \u201cAmber is a lot stronger than she knows she is,\u201d says my trainer, Miko. \u201cAs her partner, it\u2019s your job to push her.\u201d<br data-node-id=\"2.3\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">At Legacy, these Partner Interval Training classes (P.I.T.) classes are an integral part of the \u201cno days off\u201d lifestyle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/manningsumner\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/manningsumner\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Manning Sumner\" data-node-id=\"4.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manning Sumner<\/a> has created as the owner of the gym, which opened in 2008.    <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">A former Auburn football player, Sumner found himself in Miami as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/entertainment\/a61657578\/stunt-action-all-stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/entertainment\/a61657578\/stunt-action-all-stars\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"stunt double\" data-node-id=\"5.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">stunt double<\/a> for 2002\u2019s Bad Boys II. That\u2019s when he discovered a ton of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a61816531\/mh-strong-all-pro-nfl-team-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a61816531\/mh-strong-all-pro-nfl-team-2024\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"NFL players\" data-node-id=\"5.5\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">NFL players<\/a> would spend the offseason in the Magic City. \u201cAll my NFL buddies kept calling asking if we could train together,\u201d says Sumner. \u201cNext thing I know, 29 NFL players are working out with me. I wasn\u2019t necessarily coaching them, but I was always known as the kind of guy you want to work out with, because I was a bit of a workout nut.\u201d Sumner received his bachelor&#8217;s degree in exercise physiology at Auburn University and went on to work as a personal trainer.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Quickly, Sumner found himself hosting workouts where dozens of people would show up. Since he was just one trainer he would pair people off and watch their dynamics as they would automatically start counting reps, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a62303719\/how-to-spot-gym-weight-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a62303719\/how-to-spot-gym-weight-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"spotting\" data-node-id=\"6.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">spotting<\/a>, and motivating each other. When it came to private training sessions, Sumner would often double book clients to save himself from having no shows. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">\u201cAt the time Marion Barber (who was a running back for the Dallas Cowboys) was in one of my private sessions and another client who was an overweight woman came at the same time,\u201d says Sumner. \u201cSo I put them through this partner-style workout where they did the exact same movements\u2014same rep scheme, same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a19540335\/how-long-should-i-rest-between-sets-to-build-muscle\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a19540335\/how-long-should-i-rest-between-sets-to-build-muscle\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"rest period\" data-node-id=\"7.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">rest period<\/a>, same everything except for weight. At the end of it they were drenched in sweat, high-fiving, laughing, having a good time.\u201d Sumner says that\u2019s when the light bulb went off and Partner Interval Training was officially formed.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">You won\u2019t find televisions throughout Legacy, because Sumner purposely set this gym up in a way that encourages people to connect with each other, communicate, and build real community. Which isn\u2019t just a bonus when it comes to, say, pushing a 300-pound <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a40887237\/sled-push-pull-training-advice-squat-university-aaron-horschig-graham-tuttle\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a40887237\/sled-push-pull-training-advice-squat-university-aaron-horschig-graham-tuttle\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"sled\" data-node-id=\"8.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">sled<\/a>, then doing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a19537513\/how-to-use-battling-ropes\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a19537513\/how-to-use-battling-ropes\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"battle ropes\" data-node-id=\"8.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">battle ropes<\/a>, followed by an agility ladder, and then a gauntlet of other exercises\u2014it\u2019s essential.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Sumner has set up an easy-to-follow system that has participants at each station for two minutes with their partner doing anywhere from five to eight reps and\/or 10 to 20 seconds of each exercise before switching off. The gym features 20 different interval stations, and a typical class might  include weight machines, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/g26014893\/best-rowing-machines\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/g26014893\/best-rowing-machines\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"rowers\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">rowers<\/a>, stationary bikes, a sled, ropes, and an array of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a43539368\/bodyweight-workout-mistakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a43539368\/bodyweight-workout-mistakes\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"bodyweight moves\" data-node-id=\"9.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">bodyweight moves<\/a>. \u201cTwo minutes can seem like a really long time when you&#8217;re doing these exercises,\u201d says Sumner.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">And he\u2019s right. At one point, I had a resistance band around my thighs and was walking in a squat across the room. It felt like forever, my legs shake, and yet the clock said I still had 90 seconds left. My partner did her best to distract me by chatting about my weekend plans and between that and the super hype music, I made it through. (Though the details were hazy, I\u2019ll admit.)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">For years I\u2019ve been intimidated by open format gyms, unsure of what I could handle or how to properly do each exercise. Mix in the presence of gridiron big-timers and I was worried I wouldn\u2019t be able to hang.
