Another month of books, another month of book covers. July brings us a fresh summer basket of juicy, saturated colors, clever concepts, and weird peek-a-boos. Here are some of my favorites from the month that was:<\/p>\n

\"archive<\/a> Ruben Reyes, Jr.,\u00a0Archive of Unknown Universes<\/a>; illustration by Mar\u00eda Jes\u00fas Contreras (Mariner, July 1)<\/p>\n

Love the font, love the frame, but what I find most pleasing is that an illustrated cover can look so matte and so juicy at the same time. (Contreras also illustrated the cover of Reyes\u2019 There Is a Rio Grande in Heaven<\/a>\u00a0which pulls off a similar effect.)<\/p>\n

\"Helen<\/a> Helen Schulman,\u00a0Fools for Love: Stories<\/a>; cover design by Janet Hansen (Knopf, July 8)<\/p>\n

I have seen many many many mouths on book covers (people like mouths, I wonder why?), but never quite like this\u2014I love both the concept and the restraint. I also appreciate that Hansen carried over the font for the supplementary text from her design for Schulman\u2019s\u00a0Lucky Dogs<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"chilco\"<\/a> Daniela Catrileo, tr. Jacob Edelstein, Chilco<\/a>; cover design by Charlotte Grimm (FSG Originals, July 15)<\/p>\n

I can go either way on faux-distressing these days, but the colors and balance are really doing it for me here.<\/p>\n

\"Kyung-Ran<\/a> Kyung-Ran Jo, tr. Chi-Young Kim, Blowfish<\/a>; cover design by Giacomo Girardi\/Rodrigo Corral Studio, based on the Korean edition (Astra House, July 15)<\/p>\n

This art might have made for a thousand good covers, but the title placement, on its little faux-sticker, makes it great.<\/p>\n

\"make<\/a> Carrie R. Moore,\u00a0Make Your Way Home<\/a>; cover design by Beth Steidle (Tin House, July 15)<\/p>\n

Holy saturation, Batman. I love the intensity of the colors, the takeover pattern, the text treatment on the edges (with, for contrast, its subtle gradation).<\/p>\n

\"strata\"<\/a> Laura Poppick,\u00a0Strata: Stories from Deep Time<\/a>; cover design by Steve Attardo (Norton, July 15)<\/p>\n

Just perfectly what it needs to be. Love the font.<\/p>\n

\"helene<\/a> H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Bessette, tr. Kate Briggs, Lili is Crying<\/a>; cover design by Jamie Keenan (New Directions, July 22)<\/p>\n

The paper tear\/tear with the title in it! The face just barely visible! Brilliant.<\/p>\n

\"Michael<\/a> Michael Clune, Pan<\/a>; cover design by Janet Hansen (Penguin Press, July 22)<\/p>\n

As Dan at Casual Optimist pointed out<\/a>, peephole eyes are weirdly prevalent this month. But I particularly appreciate this one for how unabashedly creepy it is.<\/p>\n

\"broad<\/a> Kate Broad,\u00a0Greenwich<\/a>; cover design by Olga Grlic (St. Martin\u2019s Press, July 22)<\/p>\n

What can I say, I love a drip.<\/p>\n

\"Necessary<\/a> Eloghosa Osunde, Necessary Fiction<\/a>; cover design by Lauren Peters-Collaer, art by Affen Segun (Riverhead, July 22)<\/p>\n

Another great frame, another great color story, another great piece of art.<\/p>\n

\"black<\/a> Tre Johnson,\u00a0Black Genius<\/a>; cover design by Dominique Jones (Dutton, July 29)<\/p>\n

And one with no color or art at all, that manages to be just as impactful, in its own way.<\/p>\n
