{"id":107712,"date":"2025-07-31T14:07:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-31T14:07:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/107712\/"},"modified":"2025-07-31T14:07:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-31T14:07:14","slug":"en-route-to-israel-german-fm-urges-2-state-process-says-too-soon-to-recognize-palestine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/107712\/","title":{"rendered":"En route to Israel, German FM urges 2-state process, says too soon to recognize Palestine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ahead of an official visit to Israel on Thursday, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said that Germany does not currently seek to join the recent wave of Western nations moving to recognize a Palestinian state, but warned that if negotiations for a two-state process do not begin, Germany may be forced to reconsider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGermany is convinced: To resolve the conflict sustainably, a negotiated two-state solution remains the only path that enables both peoples to live in peace, security, and dignity,\u201d Wadephul said in a statement issued shortly before departing for meetings in Israel and the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Germany, the recognition of a Palestinian state comes more at the end of that process. But such a process must begin now,\u201d the minister urged, while cautioning that \u201cif that process continues to be blocked, Germany must consider reacting accordingly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The top German diplomat\u2019s visit takes place during a stormy diplomatic period for Israel, after a series of Western allies, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/france-will-recognize-palestinian-state-at-september-un-confab-macron-announces\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">France<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/uk-to-recognize-palestinian-state-in-sept-unless-israel-ends-gaza-war-commits-to-peace\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United Kingdom<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/following-france-and-uk-canada-says-it-will-recognize-palestinian-state-in-september\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canada<\/a>, announced their intent or serious consideration given to unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September amid growing international outrage over the humanitarian situation in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli officials have uniformly rejected unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state, arguing that it rewards terrorism and undermines Israel\u2019s leverage in ongoing efforts to free the remaining hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir responded in no subtle terms to Wadephul\u2019s remarks, writing in a Hebrew-language post on X: \u201c80 years after the Holocaust, and Germany is returning to supporting Nazism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Around 145 countries now recognize or plan to recognize Palestinian statehood.\u00a0 The White House on Wednesday reiterated that US President Donald Trump would not be doing so.<\/p>\n<p>Wadephul said the trip to Israel and the West Bank came after \u201ca joint decision of the security cabinet, to consult with my counterparts\u201d on \u201cthe dramatically worsening\u201d humanitarian situation in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-fullwidth wp-image-3606394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/AP25191596898700-e1753470180333-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/p>\n<p>British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, left, and French President Emmanuel Macron hold a joint press conference in London, July 10, 2025. (Leon Neal\/Pool Photo via AP)<\/p>\n<p>He added that \u201cIsrael is finding itself increasingly in the minority\u201d after the recent UN conference on a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict \u2014 boycotted by the US and Israel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn view of the open threats of annexation by some in the Israeli government, a growing number of European countries are ready to recognize a state of Palestine without prior negotiations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Wadephul is expected to meet with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar on Thursday at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem, and will also hold meetings in the West Bank on Friday before returning to Germany, according to the German embassy.<\/p>\n<p>The minister said he will focus on \u201cthree messages\u201d during his trip: that Hamas release the remaining hostages in Gaza \u2014 \u201camong them also German citizens\u201d \u2014 and give up its military and political power; that Israel \u201ctake swift, comprehensive, and lasting action to alleviate the catastrophic situation in the Gaza Strip\u201d; and that a two-state solution process must urgently be set in motion.<\/p>\n<p>Wadephul\u2019s trip had not been previously announced, and follows German Chancellor Friedrich Merz\u2019s statements earlier this week that Germany, France and the United Kingdom were considering sending their foreign ministers to Israel on August 7 in an attempt to ramp up international pressure over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-fullwidth wp-image-3565722\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/AFP__20250605__49C99ZQ__v1__HighRes__GermanyIsraelPoliticsDiplomacy-e1749134375268-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/p>\n<p>German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, right, and Israel\u2019s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar attend a joint press conference at the German foreign ministry in Berlin, on June 5, 2025.
