{"id":107855,"date":"2025-07-31T15:23:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-31T15:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/107855\/"},"modified":"2025-07-31T15:23:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-31T15:23:10","slug":"minister-dismisses-peers-claims-that-uk-recognition-of-palestine-may-break-international-law-palestinian-territories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/107855\/","title":{"rendered":"Minister dismisses peers\u2019 claims that UK recognition of Palestine may break international law | Palestinian territories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The UK\u2019s plan to recognise a Palestinian state is compliant with international law, a minister has said, after a group of peers raised concerns that it did not meet the legal bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Gareth Thomas, a business minister, said it was a \u201cpolitical judgment\u201d that Palestine should be recognised and that the government believed it was compatible with the criteria for statehood under the Montevideo convention, a treaty signed in 1933.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">In a significant shift in the UK\u2019s approach, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2025\/jul\/29\/uk-to-recognise-state-of-palestine-in-september-unless-israel-holds-to-a-ceasefire\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starmer said on Tuesday<\/a> that recognition would take place before the UN general assembly in New York this September, unless Israel agreed to a series of conditions set out in the UK-led eight-point peace plan, which has been backed by allies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The conditions included Israel taking \u201csubstantive steps\u201d to end the situation in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gaza\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gaza<\/a>, reaching a ceasefire, committing to no annexation in the West Bank and a long-term peace process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">On Thursday, however, 40 members of the House of Lords, including high-profile lawyers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/politics\/article\/palestine-pledge-could-break-the-law-top-lawyers-warn-starmer-3lx0mv6lk\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote to Richard Hermer<\/a>, the attorney general, challenging the prime minister\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">They said the move towards recognising Palestine may breach international law, questioning whether it met the conditions of having a defined territory, a permanent population, an effective government and the capacity to enter into relations with other states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Asked whether recognising Palestine would be compliant with international law, Thomas told Times Radio: \u201cYes, we believe it is.
