{"id":107891,"date":"2025-07-31T15:42:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-31T15:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/107891\/"},"modified":"2025-07-31T15:42:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-31T15:42:09","slug":"stephen-colbert-mocks-overreaction-to-sydney-sweeney-ad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/107891\/","title":{"rendered":"Stephen Colbert Mocks \u2018Overreaction\u2019 to Sydney Sweeney Ad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tEven Stephen Colbert thinks the online uproar over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/sydney-sweeney\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sydney-sweeney_1\" data-tag=\"sydney-sweeney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sydney Sweeney<\/a>\u2018s American Eagle jeans ad is a bit much. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Late Show host weighed in on the culture war controversy over the Euphoria star\u2019s sultry ad which makes a play on words comparing the sex symbols \u201cgenes\u201d with the word \u201cjeans.\u201d The ad has been slammed by some online as a Nazi-like pro-eugenics racist propaganda, while others have cheered the company and actress for refusing to apologize in the wake of social media outrage which many view a bad faith take on something that\u2019s meant to be playful. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBut here\u2019s how Colbert \u2014 who recently learned his CBS series will come to end next year \u2014 seemed to find the matter rather silly when he laughingly weighed in Wednesday night (video below). <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t want to alarm you, but the internet is mad about something,\u201d Colbert said. \u201cThis time, it\u2019s a commercial from American Eagle Outfitters starring Sydney Sweeney, take take a look.\u201d Colbert plays the clip. \u201cJust like Sydney Sweeney, I also carry the gene for sexy commercial scratchy voice. I get it from my uncle on my mother\u2019s side \u2026 Now, some people look at this and they\u2019re seeing something sinister, saying that the genes-jeans denim wordplay in an ad featuring a white blonde woman means American Eagle could be promoting eugenics, white supremacy and Nazi propaganda. That might be a bit of an overreaction \u2014 although Hitler did briefly model for Mein Kampfort Fit Jeans.\u201d Colbert added: \u201cHow do you say \u2018badonk\u2019 in German?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSome of Colbert\u2019s fans pushed back on Instagram, writing messages like, \u201cIs it overreaction to observe and point out propaganda in times like these?\u201d and \u201cIf not a subtle message of White Supremacy, and Nazi Propaganda, then why only blonde hair blue eyes, and no other races were featured?\u201d and \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s an overreaction. They knew exactly what they were doing when they made the commercial. So the blue eyed blonde has the best genes?\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe controversy has been compared to a rather similar sexy Calvin Klein ad from the 1980s featuring actress Brooke Shields when she was only 15. Shields told Vogue in 2021 that she found the backlash \u201cridiculous.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn recent days, the White House also sounded off about the ad, with <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/StevenCheung47\/status\/1950293964453495162\" target=\"_blank\">spokesman Steven Cheung <\/a>sharing an MSNBC story with the headline \u201cSydney Sweeney\u2019s ad shows an unbridled cultural shift towards whiteness\u201d and wrote: \u201cCancel culture run amok. This warped, moronic, and dense liberal thinking is a big reason why Americans voted the way they did in 2024.
