The rest ends up in landfills, or leaks into the natural environment, which is impacting everything from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/18\/health\/microplastic-harm-us-coastline-wellness#:~:text=Chemicals%20in%20microplastics%20are%20linked%20to%20known%20health%20harms&amp;text=Chemicals%20commonly%20used%20in%20plastic,hormonal%20disruptions%20and%20certain%20cancers.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">human health<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/09\/16\/us\/plastic-recycling-climate-impact-lbg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the climate.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdpcyz5000023b6kfof5r6h9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Representatives from countries around the world will gather in Geneva in August to try to finalize a legally binding UN treaty to combat plastic pollution. But in the meantime, they say that consumer efforts can still have an impact. While many people already make efforts to switch to reusable tote bags, water bottles and straws, there are plenty of other ways to make life greener, from the kitchen to the bathroom.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdpcyz5000043b6kz9s1q4ux@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here are some ideas on how you can use less plastic in your daily life.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdpcyrbx00003b6k3drq3bja@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This July is the fifteenth that Rebecca Prince-Ruiz has attempted to go plastic free. The Australia-based founder of the Plastic Free July campaign has been joined by hundreds of<strong> <\/strong>people across the world trying to reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plasticfreejuly.org\/get-involved\/plastic-free-pledge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">their reliance on single-use plastic<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdpcz37u00083b6krxci9iry@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This year, she\u2019s creating a party kit that contains 15 reusable cups, plates, bowls and decorative items like bunting. She plans to make it available for her neighbors when they host parties.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-2156161048.jpg\" alt=\"A children's birthday party with reusable tableware.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4378\" width=\"6566\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdpczu0j000f3b6kmjt5ghhy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When it comes to gifts, she suggests reusable fabric wraps instead of wrapping paper, which can contain plastic \u2013 or gifting experiences or vouchers instead.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdpczu0j000g3b6ks2wk7t5j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hosts can also request that guests not bring gifts and do away with items like glitter, which is mostly made with a plastic called polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Microplastics from glitter are commonly found in <a href=\"https:\/\/pursuit.unimelb.edu.au\/articles\/plant-based-glitter-outshines-plastic-alternatives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sewage sludge,<\/a> according to researchers at the University of Melbourne, and could harm lakes and rivers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aru.ac.uk\/news\/glitter-litter-could-be-damaging-rivers-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to another study<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdpczu0j000h3b6kdz9hgqlf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.partykitnetwork.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Party Kit Network<\/a> offers tips for anyone to put together reusable partyware. It also provides a directory for people across the world, including in the UK, Australia and the US, to find places to borrow kits locally.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdpczu0j000j3b6ky7w5ctev@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Every minute, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/stories\/2023\/08\/disposable-nappies-landfill-plastic-circular-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">300,000 disposable diapers<\/a> are sent to landfills globally, according to the World Economic Forum. Diapers can contain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0048969722024329\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">plastic polymers<\/a> like polypropylene and polyethylene to aid absorption and prevent leakage. By some estimates, it can take a diaper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.london.gov.uk\/who-we-are\/what-london-assembly-does\/london-assembly-publications\/single-use-plastic-unflushables\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">400 years<\/a> to decompose.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdpczt47000d3b6k07z37oqj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mark Miodownik, a professor of materials &amp; society at University College London (UCL), says diapers are around 40% plastic, adding that \u201cthey are going to landfill, into oceans, into rivers, or getting burnt openly.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdpd0q0c000r3b6kzjinx87e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some brands offer lower-plastic versions, but they still release climate-warming methane when they decompose in a landfill, and while washable diapers are an option, they come with their own environmental cost, including the water and energy consumed when washing and drying them.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-1621469865.jpg\" alt=\"A young girl potty training with her parent.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"5273\" width=\"7910\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdpd0q0c000s3b6ky3egbw12@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Miodownik says that thinking outside the box is necessary. Parents might consider early potty training to be more environmentally friendly. He points out that in wealthy countries, the average age of potty training is <a href=\"https:\/\/eric.org.uk\/why-are-children-potty-training-later\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">trending upwards<\/a>, increasing the length of time parents rely on disposable diapers. Many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-wide-ban-on-wet-wipes-containing-plastic-to-be-put-into-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wet wipes<\/a> also contain plastic.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdpd0q0c000u3b6kfkkqhk5q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are similar environmental issues with tampons and pads. Prince-Ruiz says that during her second Plastic Free July, she switched to reusable menstrual products. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/cnn-underscored\/health-fitness\/how-i-went-zero-waste-period-care-routine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Period underwear and menstrual cups<\/a> are available as are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/10\/02\/cnn-underscored\/thinx-period-undies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reusable tampon applicators<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdpd0q0c000w3b6k2quw8eiz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Packaging comprises nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/en\/analysis\/maps-and-charts\/nearly-40-percent-of-plastic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">40%<\/a> of the planet\u2019s plastic waste. Instead of buying snacks off the shelf, Prince-Ruiz is exercising her creativity in the kitchen, by making her own crackers. Her quick and easy recipe consists of slicing a baguette thinly, putting a bit of olive oil on it, and grilling for a few minutes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdpd0p5x000p3b6kh37ygq0w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She makes her own granola using ingredients purchased without packaging from a bulk store. And she makes stock at home, storing bones and vegetable scraps in the freezer until she collects enough or needs stock.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-1374561263.jpg\" alt=\"Homemade granola being prepared.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4160\" width=\"6240\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdpd1b9y00143b6kal9p3hon@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She also cooks her own beans, which she buys unpackaged. Canned foods are often coated with a layer of plastic to keep the metal from corroding.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdpd1b9y00153b6khl8w9j8m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But there are items she hasn\u2019t been able to find suitable replacements for, like tortilla wraps. \u201cMy kids don\u2019t like the ones that I make, and we don\u2019t have a handy local source.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdpd1b9y00163b6k25qq3ug3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bhavna Middha, a senior research fellow at Melbourne\u2019s RMIT University focused on sustainable consumption, says that re-thinking things like bringing homemade food to work or school instead of relying on packaged granola bars can have a positive environmental and health impact. A study she did found that the installation of microwaves on RMIT\u2019s campus enabled people to eat food they brought in from home.
