{"id":109717,"date":"2025-08-01T07:56:20","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T07:56:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/109717\/"},"modified":"2025-08-01T07:56:20","modified_gmt":"2025-08-01T07:56:20","slug":"trump-convinced-netanyahu-prolonging-gaza-war-for-political-reasons-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/109717\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump convinced Netanyahu prolonging Gaza war for political reasons &#8212; report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US President Donald Trump has come to believe that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is prolonging Israel\u2019s war in Gaza to hold on to political power, according to two Trump administration officials who spoke to The Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2025\/07\/trump-netanyahu-gaza-famine\/683720\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Thursday report<\/a> claimed, based on several unnamed sources, that Trump and many of his aides are more eager than ever to bring the fighting in Gaza to a close amid widespread condemnation of Israel\u2019s wartime conduct, including from a growing faction of isolationists in the Republican Party.<\/p>\n<p>With negotiations for a hostage and ceasefire deal once again facing steep hurdles, the American president has reportedly become convinced that Israel already achieved its military objectives in Gaza long ago, and that the current fighting is fueled chiefly by the premier\u2019s political interests.<\/p>\n<p>The report was published as Trump\u2019s Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff met with Netanyahu in Jerusalem Thursday afternoon to discuss the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/israel-said-to-warn-hamas-it-will-annex-parts-of-gaza-if-no-hostage-deal-reached\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stalled negotiations between Israel and Hamas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Witkoff was also slated to make a rare visit to Gaza during his trip, to visit aid distribution hubs run by the US- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, whose operations have sparked major international backlash in recent months amid near-daily reports of deadly shootings at their sites by Israeli troops.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 1,000 people have been killed by Israeli fire near GHF sites, though Israel says the toll is exaggerated.<\/p>\n<p>US to demand Israel allow more Gaza aid<\/p>\n<p>Trump tasked Witkoff with forming his own assessment of Gaza\u2019s humanitarian situation and the GHF\u2019s viability as an aid distributor, according to two US officials who spoke to The Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Trump aides have reportedly discussed urging Israel to increase the food and other supplies it allows into the Strip, so that enough will find its way into the hands of civilians, even if some were to be stolen by Hamas, as Israel claims has happened time and time again.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3609865\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/AFP__20250730__68AG4WE__v3__HighRes__TopshotPalestinianIsraelConflict.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Displaced Palestinians gather to receive aid from a GHF aid distribution point in the so-called \u2018Netzarim corridor\u2019 area in the central Gaza Strip on July 30, 2025. (Eyad Baba\/AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Earlier Thursday, Trump called on the terror group to surrender and release the 50 hostages it is holding in order to end hunger and other woes in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fastest way to end the Humanitarian Crises in Gaza is for Hamas to SURRENDER AND RELEASE THE HOSTAGES!!!\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/israel-said-to-warn-hamas-it-will-annex-parts-of-gaza-if-no-hostage-deal-reached\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> he wrote on his Truth Social platform.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The remarks signaled a change in tone from some of his other recent comments regarding food shortages in Gaza, in which he pushed back against the Israeli line, including during a Tuesday press conference alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.<\/p>\n<p>When asked whether he was convinced by Netanyahu\u2019s insistence that there is no starvation in Gaza, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/you-cant-fake-that-trump-sees-real-starvation-in-gaza-says-israel-can-do-more\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump replied:<\/a> \u201cBased on television, not particularly, because those children look very hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Israel losing favor with some American right-wingers<\/p>\n<p>Trump is not just motivated by humanitarian concerns in seeking an end to the fighting, according to the report, but has also grown frustrated over his repeated failure to make good on campaign promises, among them bringing peace to the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>The US president sought to continue the legacy he carved out in his first term with the Abraham Accords \u2014 which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab countries \u2014 and press on in fostering peace throughout the region.<\/p>\n<p>On top of his own presidential aspirations, a growing number of Republican voters have also grown disenchanted with the US-Israel alliance, as sections of Trump\u2019s base veer toward a more isolationist foreign policy.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s frequent appeals to an \u201cAmerica First\u201d approach have largely guided the Make America Great Again world. Though the Republican Party remains solidly pro-Israel, some lawmakers such as far-right congresswoman Marjorie Taylor-Greene \u2014 who called Israel\u2019s war in Gaza a \u201cgenocide\u201d on X earlier in July \u2014 have embodied this change among America\u2019s right-wing.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Yesterday I spoke to a Christian pastor from Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>There are children starving. <\/p>\n<p>And Christians have been killed and injured, as well as many innocent people. <\/p>\n<p>If you are an American Christian, this should be absolutely unacceptable to you. <\/p>\n<p>Just as we said that Hamas killing\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rep. The shift has occurred <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/trumps-maga-base-defies-conservative-pro-israel-doctrine\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mostly outside the halls of power,<\/a> and particularly among American right-wing youth.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u2018My people are starting to hate Israel\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Trump recently warned a Jewish campaign donor that his MAGA base was beginning to turn on Israel, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy people are starting to hate Israel,\u201d Trump was quoted as having told the unnamed \u201cprominent\u201d donor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are people in the White House who are watching this narrative develop in the right wing, in the MAGA world, that is very anti-Israel, very anti-Jewish,\u201d an unnamed expert with contacts inside the Trump administration was quoted by the FT as saying.<\/p>\n<p>A CNN poll this month found the share of Republicans who believe Israel\u2019s actions have been fully justified has dropped from 68% in 2023 to 52%.<\/p>\n<p>A Pew Research poll from April, meanwhile, found that while Republicans over age 50 remain staunchly pro-Israel since 2022, the Jewish state\u2019s unfavorability among Republican young adults climbed from 35% to 50% over those three years.<\/p>\n<p>A White House spokesperson declined The Atlantic\u2019s request for comment, as did a spokesperson for Netanyahu.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\tIs The Times of Israel important to you?\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>If so, we have a request.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Every day, even during war, our journalists keep you abreast of the most important developments that merit your attention.
