The gallery will be inside a 2,600-square-foot former post office at 201\u2013225 Hamilton Ave.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Many in the local art world suspect the reason for opening in Palo Alto is to be closer to Silicon Valley clients; specifically, Laurene Powell Jobs and her Emerson Collective offices, which are just two blocks away from the new gallery. Powell Jobs, who has a net worth of $14.3 billion, is rumored to be one of Hauser &amp; Wirth&#8217;s top clients. In 2022, she <a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/market\/kenny-schachter-on-the-great-crypto-disappearing-act-2141954\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">withdrew support for Pace Gallery<\/a> shortly before it closed its Palo Alto location and moved her business to Hauser &amp; Wirth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">The gallery renovation will be led by Paris-based Luis Laplace \u2014 the same architect designing Powell Jobs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archpaper.com\/2025\/06\/former-san-francisco-art-institute-campus-renovation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">renovation of the San Francisco Art Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">The Swiss juggernaut is setting up shop just two doors down from the former Pace Gallery. It will be the third Hauser &amp; Wirth in California; the others are in Los Angeles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cNorthern California occupies an equally powerful position [as Los Angeles] as home to a fantastically dedicated community of collectors and the museums they have built,\u201d gallery president Marc Payot said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Silicon Valley is home to a bevy of the world\u2019s top art collectors, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-collectors\/top-200-collectors\/top-200-collectors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ARTnews<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-collectors\/top-200-profiles\/laura-arrillaga-andreessen-and-marc-andreessen\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marc Andreesen<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-collectors\/top-200-profiles\/lawrence-j-ellison\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Larry Ellison<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-collectors\/top-200-profiles\/komal-shah-gaurav-garg\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Komal Shah<\/a>, and SF Mayor Daniel Lurie\u2019s mother, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-collectors\/top-200-profiles\/mimi-and-peter-haas\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mimi Haas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Hauser &amp; Wirth is the first top-drawer gallery to bet big on the region since the exodus of Gagosian from San Francisco in 2021 and Pace Gallery from Palo Alto in 2022. I think that\u2019s what a lot of organizations are doing, is meeting people where they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">With 17 galleries and counting, Hauser &amp; Wirth is one of the biggest and most influential galleries in the world, with a reputation for building out more than just white walls to hang art. The galleries, in international jet-set haunts like Menorca, Monaco, SoHo, West Hollywood, and London, often are set in sprawling compounds with gardens and acclaimed bookstores and restaurants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Laura Sweeney, who has worked as an art adviser in San Francisco for more than 13 years, said Hauser &amp; Wirth will enhance the Bay Area art scene.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cThis move means more shows, it means more artists, and more opportunities for collectors,\u201d she said. \u201cHauser has been such an extraordinary supporter of the institutions in the Bay Area, and they work closely with the curators here. They come to FOG, and they don\u2019t just bring old inventory, they bring great new works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">In fact, the gallery had the <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/01\/26\/inside-exclusive-san-francisco-art-week-parties\/\" data-post-id=\"54183e59-9df8-4dea-9c2c-99b4f20ca967\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">largest reported sale<\/a> at this year\u2019s FOG Design + Art fair:\u00a0 a painting by Avery Singer that went for $575,000.
