But in the months since the tariff was imposed, Canada has boosted border security and hired a fentanyl czar to oversee its federal strategy against the deadly opioid.<\/p>\n<p>Carney defended Canada\u2019s efforts in his letter, saying the country has made \u201chistoric investments\u201d and would continue to work with the U.S. to stop the \u201cscourge of fentanyl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States has justified its most recent trade action on the basis of the cross-broder flow of fentanyl, despite the fact that Canada accounts for only one per cent of U.S. fentanyl imports and has been working intensively to further reduce these volumes,\u201d the prime minister wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The number cited by Carney is backed by annual drug seizure statistics from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency, which shows that while about one per cent of all fentanyl seized at U.S. borders comes from Canada, the vast majority comes from Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Trump frustrated with India trade talks, thinks 25% tariffs will help: Haslett'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Sequence_25.00_04_14_23.Still002.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2:37<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTrump frustrated with India trade talks, thinks 25% tariffs will help: Haslett\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Seizures did, however, shoot up to 11 and 14 kilograms in April and May, respectively, but dropped to one kilogram in June.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Chamber of Commerce criticized the White House for the reasoning behind the tariff, while supporting the federal government for its handling of negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe White House fact sheet should be called a fact-less sheet when it comes to basing trade decisions about Canada on the fentanyl emergency,\u201d Candace Lang, the Chamber\u2019s president and CEO, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Carney government is right to prioritize a strong, future-focused deal over a rushed one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister went on in his letter to reiterate comments he\u2019s made in recent weeks that the federal government would continue to negotiate with the U.S., but would focus on \u201cbuilding Canada strong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He cited work by Ottawa and the provincial and territorial governments to cut interprovincial trade barriers, and plans for \u201cnation-building projects\u201d \u2014 two key goals of the Liberal government since it was re-elected in April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanadians will be our own best customer, creating more well-paying careers at home, as we strengthen and diversify our trading partners throughout the world,\u201d Carney said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump raised new concerns about whether a trade deal would be made with Canada when he said Canada\u2019s decision to recognize a Palestinian state would make it \u201cvery hard\u201d to reach an agreement.
