(BTN High)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A global 2024 study commissioned by tech company Human Mobile Devices (HMD) found that young people were being given smartphones at an average age of 11 years old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In some cases, smartphones were being introduced as young as three years old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This early introduction to smartphones has &#8220;dramatically reshaped childhood and adolescence&#8221;, according to\u00a0<a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/19452829.2025.2518313?src=exp-la#abstract\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new research<\/a> published in the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Using survey data from more than 100,000 18 to 24-year-olds, researchers found that the younger those surveyed got a smartphone, from the age of 13 and under, the worse their mental health was.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The specific symptoms reported included suicidal thoughts, aggression and detachment from reality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">When asked what they thought about the findings, the teens BTN High spoke to said it made sense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Especially because a lot of the platforms I use, like Instagram, can be a little addictive \u2026 it&#8217;s hard for me to put it down,&#8221; Lily, 15, said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A teenage girls with long blonde, wavy hair.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2a8e8028369498079b484e6b2619d307\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Lily says she finds social media platforms can be addictive. (BTN High)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I remember in year 10 I was really at my lowest and I think that social media was the significant contributing factor to it,&#8221; Eric, 17, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Harsimrat, 15, said it was not just the mental health impacts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There are many issues like attention span,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Because even myself, sometimes in class, I just doze off because I just can&#8217;t spend that much time looking at the board.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Delaying smartphone &#8216;sensible&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Child psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg led a review into phone use in schools in 2018, which has since resulted in a nationwide ban on phones in public schools.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in a blue suit jacket and white collared shirt smiles as he sits in a room with rows of red chairs.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/ab97a88914ade538c6943248ca040ac4\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Michael Carr-Gregg says it&#8217;s sensible to delay giving young people smartphones until they are 13. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Carr-Gregg said that while the study&#8217;s results were new, it was something experts had suspected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I think it was 2007, the Apple iPhone was launched, we started replacing a play-based childhood with a screen-based childhood,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And right across the western world \u2026 we have seen an increase in depression and anxiety and self-harm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Therefore, this is just a confirmation of what we already knew.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The study also recommends &#8220;graduated access restrictions,&#8221; keeping anyone under 13 from having a smartphone, which Dr Carr-Gregg approves of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Smartphones tend to be a distraction. (BTN High)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Others, like Angus, 16, weren&#8217;t keen on it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Thirteen is past that age where we \u2026 enter high school,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I feel like phones are a big part of socialising and that sort of connection that many people rely on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So I think it&#8217;s a bit harsh.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some teens turn to &#8216;dumbphones&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A &#8220;dumbphone&#8221;, also known as a feature phone, is a basic device with limited functionality.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-02-07\/mobile-phone-use-australia-switching-smartphones-dumbphones\/103313878\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Australians switching to &#8216;dumbphones&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">With mobile phone use on the rise, people of various ages are turning to simpler devices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">No internet browsing, no apps, no complex multimedia functions \u2013 and that&#8217;s the appeal for some young people, such as 18-year-old Jameson Butler.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She is the co-founder of The Luddite Club, a group of teens in New York dedicated to promoting the conscious consumption of technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;My sleep schedule was off the charts,&#8221; Jameson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I was staying up until 3am. (BTN High)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And I just felt bad \u2026 I didn&#8217;t feel there were any options or ways to combat that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Jameson said after ditching her smartphone, life improved.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Honestly, since I&#8217;ve gotten rid of my smartphone, I definitely spend more quality time with my family,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;m more present at family dinners. Join our weekly newsletter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Simar, 16, said in her case, a smartphone was handy for her parents to know her location because she had to walk to school by herself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ekaager thinks young people will keep their smartphones and find ways around the ban.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;I feel like rebellion will also happen a lot where they&#8217;ll try to seek alternatives where they&#8217;re gonna try to find loopholes, try to use VPNs,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Nevertheless, Ekaager was open to giving the dumbphone trend a go, as was Eric.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Maybe I should with the current exam season coming up,&#8221; Eric said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Lily agreed that it would be &#8220;a nice experiment to try&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">And Alex said, &#8220;I&#8217;d probably struggle to, but I would maybe give it a try just to improve my mental health.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"How old were you when you got your first smartphone?
