{"id":110819,"date":"2025-08-01T17:32:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T17:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/110819\/"},"modified":"2025-08-01T17:32:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-01T17:32:09","slug":"pirates-gm-makes-surprising-admission-about-david-bednar-trade-to-yankees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/110819\/","title":{"rendered":"Pirates GM makes surprising admission about David Bednar trade to Yankees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>David Bednar was one of a handful of closers dealt at the trade deadline, with the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/31\/sports\/padres-land-as-closer-mason-miller-in-mlb-trade-deadline-blockbuster\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mason Miller<\/a>, who went from the A\u2019s to the Padres, and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/30\/sports\/phillies-acquiring-flamethrower-jhoan-duran-from-twins-in-trade\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jhoan Duran<\/a> \u2014 shipped from the Twins to the Phillies \u2014 netting prospects that pop out on league-wide rankings lists.<\/p>\n<p>Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said he had a chance to land a prospect of similar standing for Bednar, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/31\/sports\/the-prospects-yankees-gave-up-for-david-bednar-at-mlb-trade-deadline\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">but he isntead preferred the Yankees\u2019 package<\/a> which consisted of their No. 8 prospect, catcher Rafael Flores, catcher\/first baseman Edgleen Perez (No. 14) and unranked outfielder Brian Sanchez.<\/p>\n<p>None of these players were ranked inside a consensus prospect board\u2019s top-100 list.<\/p>\n<p>David Bednar heads to the Yankees in a big trade.  IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had access to players who were ranked in the way that you were describing,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/pirates-david-bednar-trade-to-yankees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Cherington told reporters after the trade deadline<\/a>. \u201cWe did, and we preferred this package. Obviously, every team is going to assess the players a little bit differently, and sometimes, that could be different from the public rankings also. It was our estimation \u2014 and our opinion \u2014 that this was not just a really strong collection of talent to get for David Bednar, but also the best one that we had access to in this market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The admission may leave some scratching their heads \u2014 and Cherington is facing increased pressure in his sixth season as Pirates GM with fans clamoring for a winner around electric ace Paul Skenes.<\/p>\n<p>The Pirates, coming off consecutive 76-86 seasons, sit in last place in the NL Central at 47-62.<\/p>\n<p>Pirates general manager Ben Cherington admitted that the Yankees\u2019 offer for Bednar wasn\u2019t as lucrative as others.  Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Prospect rankings are not the be-all-end-all in terms of value and, especially in baseball, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.<\/p>\n<p>But none of the Yankees\u2019 minor leaguers that went out for Bednar were even close to being top-100 minor prospects.<\/p>\n<p>It is not clear what teams were offering touted prospects for Bednar, who is under team control through 2026.<\/p>\n<p>It is unlikely that the Yankees were willing to part with their prospects that fit the top-100 criteria, which include <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/24\/sports\/spencer-jones-flirting-with-untouchable-status-after-latest-power-display-by-yankees-prospect\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Triple-A stud outfielder Spencer Jones<\/a>, Double-A infielder George Lombard Jr. and Double-A pitcher Carlos Lagrange.<\/p>\n<p>The Phillies were in the mix for Bednar and may have been willing to deal a true top prospect for the closer, but they opted to send catcher Eduardo Tait (No. 56 overall) and pitcher Mick Abel to Minnesota for Duran, who has 2 1\/2 years of team control remaining.<\/p>\n<p>Yankees general manager <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/31\/sports\/yankees-acquire-camilo-doval-from-giants-in-last-minute-trade-deadline-move\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brian Cashman also swung trades for Giants closer Camillo Doval<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/31\/sports\/yankees-acquire-reliever-jake-bird-from-rockies\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rockies fireballer Jake Bird<\/a> to bolster what should be a strong bullpen down the stretch.<\/p>\n<p>Brian Cashman had an active trade deadline.
