The best of the internet\u2019s cat videos are coming to the big screen this weekend.<\/p>\n

Cat Video Fest<\/a> is a 73-minute, G-rated selection of all things feline<\/a> \u2014silly, cuddly, sentimental and comedic\u2014that\u2019s playing in more than 500 independent theaters<\/a> in the U.S. and Canada. A portion of ticket proceeds benefit cat-focused charities, shelters and animal welfare organization. Since 2019, it\u2019s raised over $1 million.<\/p>\n

The only San Diego-area cinema offering Cat Video Fest is Digital Gym Cinema<\/a> in San Diego\u2019s East Village. Saturday\u2019s 5 p.m. screening is already sold out, but tickets are still available for a noon screening Aug. 9. Tickets are $9 to $13. Ten percent of ticket sales will go toward the local cat charity Los Gatos de Barrio Logan.<\/p>\n

The videos are curated by Will Braden, the Seattle-based creator of the comedically existential shorts, Henri, le Chat Noir. His business cards read: \u201cI watch cat videos.\u201d And it\u2019s not a joke or an exaggeration. Braden watches thousands of hours of internet videos to make the annual compilation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to show how broad the idea of a cat video can be so there\u2019s animated things, music videos, little mini documentaries,\u201d Braden said. \u201cIt isn\u2019t all just, what I call, \u2018America\u2019s Funniest Home Cat Videos.\u2019 It\u2019s not all cats falling into a bathtub. That would get exhausting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now in its eighth year, Cat Video Fest is bigger than ever, with a global presence that\u2019s already extended to the UK and Denmark, and, for the first time, to France, Spain, Japan and Brazil. Last year, the screenings made over $1 million at the box office.<\/p>\n

In the early days, it was a bit of a process trying to convince independent movie theaters to program Cat Video Fest. But Braden, and indie distributor Oscilloscope Laboratories, have found that one year is all it takes to get past that hurdle.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverywhere that does it wants to do it again,\u201d Braden said.<\/p>\n

Current theatrical partners include Alamo Drafthouse, IFC Center, Nitehawk, Vidiots, Laemmle and Music Box. The screenings attract all variety of audiences, from kids and cat ladies to hipsters and grandparents and everyone in between.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s one of the only things, maybe besides a Pixar movie or Taylor Swift concert<\/a>, that just appeals to everybody,\u201d Braden said.<\/p>\n

And the plan is to keep going.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not going to run out of cat videos and we\u2019re not going to run out of people who want to see it,\u201d Braden said. \u201cAll I have to do is make sure that it\u2019s really funny and entertaining every year.\u201d<\/p>\n
