Tyler, the Creator made his triumphant return to the festival after canceling last year\u2019s headlining set, and Luke Combs also served as a headliner, marking the first time the festival featured a country act in a top slot. Ahead of the fest closers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/gracie-abrams\/\" id=\"auto-tag_gracie-abrams\" data-tag=\"gracie-abrams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gracie Abrams<\/a> wowed fans with a surprise appearance from Robyn, Cage the Elephant paid tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, and many more artists made waves. Here are some of the highlights from Day One of this year\u2019s edition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Tyler, the Creator Makes a Triumphant Return<\/strong><br \/>It has been four years since Tyler, the Creator<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-live-reviews\/tyler-the-creator-lollapalooza-set-list-review-1205504\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> headlined Lollapalooza<\/a> \u2014 last year he<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/tyler-the-creator-lollapalooza-outside-lands-megan-thee-stallion-sabrina-carpenter-1235043041\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> bowed out<\/a> from his top Lolla billing just six weeks before the fest. But he had a lot in store for those who were waiting for his return: A week before Lolla\u2019s 2025 edition, he dropped his second album in less than a year,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/tyler-the-creator-dont-tap-the-glass-review-1235392232\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Don\u2019t Tap the Glass,<\/a> while still in the midst of touring on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/tyler-the-creator-chromakopia-review-1235147040\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Chromakopia<\/a> \u2014 and both albums debuted at Number One. He had a lot to celebrate, and he did so without the production that featured a boat and costume changes signaling different eras from his last turn at the same T-Mobile main stage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThis time around, it was stripped down stage production-wise: He appeared on a riser with \u201cDon\u2019t Tap the Glass\u201d emblazoned across it. There weren\u2019t any extravagant props. He didn\u2019t need them. Whether he was traversing his latest material \u2014\u00a0 including the pulsating \u201cSugar on My Tongue,\u201d\u00a0 \u201cbossin\u2019 up\u201d hard on \u201cRah Tah Tah,\u201d delivering the woozy, disorienting \u201cNoid,\u201d or the vulnerable \u201cLike Him\u201d \u2014 or performing earlier material, he commanded the stage. His body was in near-constant motion, as he contorted and undulated to the grooves. Fans followed suit, and at times he served as the massive crowd\u2019s conductor, directing the audience-wide sing-along to \u201cSticky.\u201d Along with new songs, he peppered in fan favorites, including \u201cEarfquake,\u201d Wusyaname,\u201d \u201cWhodatboy,\u201d and \u201cNew Magic Wand.\u201d In the time it typically takes to earn a diploma, he has graduated to yet another next level in his constant evolution. \u2014A.L.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Luke Combs Becomes the First Country Lolla Headliner<\/strong><br \/>\u201cIf I wasn\u2019t here tonight, I know I\u2019d still be playing these songs, just somewhere else, like a bar in my college town,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/luke-combs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luke Combs<\/a> said to preface \u201cDoin\u2019 This.\u201d The first country singer to headline Lollapalooza was personable and sincere in a genre whose biggest hits revel in karma and spite. Combs found his own pathway to the top of the radio charts and festival circuit as a down-to-earth softie. Working from his 2017 debut, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/luke-combs-beautiful-crazy-number-one-country-chart-record-this-ones-for-you-800160\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This One\u2019s for You<\/a>, on to 2023\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/luke-combs-growin-up-and-gettin-old-new-album-1234669192\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gettin\u2019 Old<\/a>, he arranged his set into chapters of his life. Combs was a natural storyteller when not singing, too. While introducing songs, he recounted the moment he knew he just met his future wife, and why he\u2019s proud to hail from North Carolina, even though he relocated to Nashville. Yet his final moment of tenderness needed no introduction: a faithful cover of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/tracy-chapman-fast-car-luke-combs-number-one-song-1234781760\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fast Car<\/a>,\u201d as immortalized by his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/tracy-chapman-fast-car-grammys-how-it-happened-secret-1234962581\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">internet-breaking duet<\/a> with Tracy Chapman at last year\u2019s Grammys, only this time he was in a Cubs jersey. \u201cIf you didn\u2019t love country music showing up tonight,\u201d he said, \u201cI hope you do now.\u201d \u2014N.C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Gracie Abrams Ushers in Lolla 2025\u2019s Pop Queen Reign With Robyn<\/strong><br \/>Gracie Abrams is part of the growing contingency of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/pop-queens-are-rock-gods-olivia-rodrigo-charli-xcx-1235341269\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> pop queens who are taking over<\/a> coveted high-tier festival slots, and it\u2019s about damn time. She last performed at Lollapalooza<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RollingStone\/status\/1553505905953603584\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"> three years ago<\/a> at a smaller stage and earlier time slot. This year, she hit Lolla\u2019s largest mainstage, where Olivia Rodrigo, for whom she opened on the Sour tour, will headline Saturday (tonight\u2019s headlining tier is the only one not featuring a female closer). \u201cLollapalooza. I\u2019m Gracie Abrams. Holy shit!\u201d she happily exclaimed, overwhelmed at the full-field turnout, which was filled with fans who sang along to songs from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/gracie-abrams-the-secret-of-us-review-1235044135\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> The Secret of Us<\/a>, including opener \u201cRisk\u201d and the contemplative \u201cBlowing Smoke.\u201d Mid-set, Abrams\u00a0traded in her acoustic guitar for piano to perform \u201cDeath Wish\u201d and \u201cI Miss You, I\u2019m Sorry.\u201d Her interactions with the camera and the crowd \u2014 at one point she took a selfie with a fan\u2019s camera, at another moment she sang directly to the livestream camera, creating an intimate moment for those at home \u2014 were endearing, as was her rousing finale, which included a surprise guest. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/gracie-abrams-robyn-dancing-on-my-own-cover-lollapalooza-1235398203\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">She brought out Robyn<\/a> to perform \u201cDancing on My Own,\u201d a song Abrams covered previously at Lolla. Augmenting the theme, they performed flanked by a video backdrop that resembled a portal with wings. Songs like opener \u201cShe Looked Like Me\u201d and \u201cImage\u201d homed in on the notion of reinvention gone awry. Beyond the surreal high concept, it was the infectious grooves and Tenenbaum\u2019s ethereal vocals that drew the audience in, taking the space tale into magical dance floor territory, such as during \u201cDeath and Romance.\u201d \u2014A.L.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Cage the Elephant Exude Charisma<\/strong><br \/>For a rock band that\u2019s upped its showmanship at each of its six Lollapalooza appearances, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/cage-the-elephant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cage the Elephant<\/a> defied expectations by packing the most charisma in their slower material. Rowdy hits \u201cHouse of Glass\u201d and \u201cCome a Little Closer\u201d were uncharacteristically dwarfed by \u201cShake Me Down\u201d or the acoustic guitar opening \u201cCigarette Daydreams.\u201d Best of all was a tribute to the similarly unpredictable Ozzy Osbourne. Instead of invoking his shocking antics, though, they leaned into his oft-overlooked sentimentality with a faithful cover of Black Sabbath\u2019s \u201cChanges\u201d to honor how the passing of time alters us all. \u2014N.C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/fcukers\/\" id=\"auto-tag_fcukers\" data-tag=\"fcukers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fcukers<\/a> Throw a Cheeky Dance Party<\/strong><br \/>Making Rolling Stone\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/fcukers-new-music-homie-dont-shake-interview-1235289433\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Future 25<\/a> list, New York City\u2019s Fcukers \u2014 comprising lead singer Shanny Wise and Jackson Walker Lewis \u2014 brought their fusion of house music inflected with pop and dub reggae to the hometown of house, and it was clear the hype around them was as infectious as their giddy sound and cheeky spin. They got the crowd going with songs such as the hip-hop-tipped \u201cPlay Me\u201d co-written and produced by Kenneth Blume (formerly known as Kenny Beats) and their breakout, set-closing \u201cBon Bon.\u201d Wise\u2019s playful, repeated lyrics and laidback delivery served as another percussive accent to their beats, which got the crowd singing and dancing along. Fueled by high-octane garage rock, the Kentucky duo of Kenzie and Laila Crowe tore through their catalog with the confidence of an aughts radio staple. While the White Stripes \u2014 their most obvious comparison \u2014 were about controlled energy, Girl Tones are proudly imperfect. Enthused by the crowd\u2019s chant-along to \u201cGot It,\u201d singer-guitarist Kenzie flung her sunglasses across the stage. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/cage-the-elephant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cage the Elephant<\/a>\u2019s Brad Shultz helped them close with a cover of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-vines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Vines<\/a>\u2019 \u201cGet Free,\u201d but not before passing the rock baton by recalling when his band played this same stage in 2007. \u2014N.C.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Role Model Taps the Dare<\/strong><br \/>Tucker Pillsbury <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/role-model-interview-breakups-tiktok-sally-tour-moments-1235326125\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">loves a pivot<\/a>, having switched from rap to folk-pop and moved from coastal Maine to bustling Hollywood. Watching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/role-model\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Role Model<\/a> onstage, it\u2019s understandable how the 28-year-old pulled it off. He\u2019s all charm and star power, whether confessing heartbroken concern in \u201cSome Protector\u201d over banjo or courting a wildcard boozehound with sunny acoustic pop in \u201cSally, When the Wine Runs Out.\u201d \u201cOoh, I feel sexy tonight!\u201d he teased between songs. It was met by a tidal wave of high-pitched screams \u2014 and they only scaled higher with \u201cLook at That Woman,\u201d \u201cDeeply Still in Love,\u201d and cameos from the Dare. \u2014N.C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Nourished by Time\u00a0Brings the Passion<\/strong><br \/>Baltimore\u2019s Marcus Brown, who performs as Nourished by Time, was still \u201cworking on\u201d new song \u201cBaby Baby\u201d from the album The Passionate Ones (out later this month), he said during his set. The song from the R&amp;B rising musician, with its stream-of-consciousness, free-flowing delivery over a lush sonic landscape, was compelling as it moved from a lustful lament to world affairs. \u201cFree Palestine,\u201d he remarked after the song, adding, \u201cFree yourselves, too.\u201d He was an expressive performer, communicating emotion not just through his lyrical subject matter, but flourishing gestures. For Ferrell, that means finding modern truths in old stories. Like the younger sibling of Sonic Youth, but with more shoegaze and cryptic experimental drone, the Los Angeles trio dialed up the distortion on \u201cClairbourne Practice\u201d and \u201cCatalogue\u201d to rattle teeth. Backed by camcorder footage of computers bumping CD drives and a smoker\u2019s windswept hair, Julie performed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/best-indie-rock-albums-2024-1235189650\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">My Anti-Aircraft Friend<\/a> cuts and fan favorite \u201cApril\u2019s-Bloom\u201d while their album title flashed onscreen like subliminal messaging.
