While you might opt for a sports recovery drink, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/food-drink\/a65510116\/electrolyte-rich-foods\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/food-drink\/a65510116\/electrolyte-rich-foods\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"electrolytes\" data-node-id=\"1.5\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">electrolytes<\/a> or plain water after a workout, there\u2019s evidence to suggest that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/food-drink\/a64654941\/healthiest-milk-types\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/food-drink\/a64654941\/healthiest-milk-types\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"milk\" data-node-id=\"1.7\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">milk<\/a> \u2013 and more specifically, chocolate milk \u2013 may better support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a65045978\/nutrition-running-recovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a65045978\/nutrition-running-recovery\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"recovery\" data-node-id=\"1.9\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">recovery<\/a> and performance.<\/p>\n<p>Why is Milk a Good Recovery Drink?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Although you might have scrolled straight past that person on social media recommending chocolate milk as a post-workout beverage, multiple scientific studies have investigated the drink\u2019s potential effects on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a65498672\/what-happens-after-you-lift-weights\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a65498672\/what-happens-after-you-lift-weights\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"recovery\" data-node-id=\"4.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">recovery<\/a> and performance. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Firstly, though, let\u2019s look at why milk (sorry, we\u2019ll get to the chocolate part in a second) is an efficient way to rehydrate.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">After conducting a series of standardised studies investigating the hydration effects of different drinks, scientists developed what\u2019s known as the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysportscience.com\/post\/2016\/10\/17\/hydrating-properties-of-various-drinks\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.mysportscience.com\/post\/2016\/10\/17\/hydrating-properties-of-various-drinks\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\" Beverage Hydration Index\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Beverage Hydration Index<\/a>. Essentially, this model compares the hydration potential of several different fluids with still water.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">As you can see, milk beats still water by a few. Why? One reason is that milk contains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/g40905450\/electrolytes\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/g40905450\/electrolytes\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"electrolytes\" data-node-id=\"11.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">electrolytes<\/a>, including sodium and potassium \u2013 the levels of which can become depleted if you\u2019ve done a particularly gruelling, sweaty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/a65362463\/tom-holland-crossfit-bodyweight-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/a65362463\/tom-holland-crossfit-bodyweight-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"workout\" data-node-id=\"11.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">workout<\/a> or been exercising in the heat, for instance. <\/p>\n<p>What Are the Added Benefits of Chocolate Milk?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Although one small <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportrc.ir\/article_129040_en.html?lang=en\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.sportrc.ir\/article_129040_en.html?lang=en\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> comparing the effects of chocolate milk to regular milk on recovery and performance (in futsal players) found that there was no difference in rehydration between the drinks, researchers found that drinking chocolate milk after play improved players\u2019 performance (they took longer to reach exhaustion in a shuttle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/cardio-exercise\/a65539554\/average-1k-run-time-for-men\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/cardio-exercise\/a65539554\/average-1k-run-time-for-men\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"run\" data-node-id=\"13.9\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">run<\/a> test performed four hours later, suggesting better recovery). <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Similarly, in a 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com?id=127X583549&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41430-018-0187-x\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41430-018-0187-x\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"review\" data-vars-ga-product-id=\"0c978ae5-1316-437f-b604-02f51e09818a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41430-018-0187-x\" researchers found that chocolate milk increased the time to exhaustion during exercise. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Another older <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.humankinetics.com\/view\/journals\/ijsnem\/16\/1\/article-p78.xml\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/journals.humankinetics.com\/view\/journals\/ijsnem\/16\/1\/article-p78.xml\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"15.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>, which tested the effects of chocolate milk on cyclists\u2019 performance when completing an endurance test four hours after a workout, also found it to be an effective recovery aid between two exhausting exercise bouts.<\/p>\n<p>Why Is Chocolate Milk a Good Recovery Drink?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Following the renewed attention on chocolate milk as a gold-standard recovery drink, sports science lecturer Matt Carpenter (@mattendurancescientist)<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mattendurancescientist\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mattendurancescientist\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\" recently took to Instagram\" data-node-id=\"17.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> recently took to Instagram<\/a> to break down exactly why it works in practice \u2013 one reason being its carb-to-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/g43617423\/best-protein-powders\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/g43617423\/best-protein-powders\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"protein\" data-node-id=\"17.5\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">protein<\/a> ratio. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">\u2018It\u2019s a roughly 3:1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a41028078\/carbohydrates\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a41028078\/carbohydrates\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"carbohydrate\" data-node-id=\"18.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">carbohydrate<\/a> to protein ratio, allowing for the rapid resynthesis of muscle glycogen \u2013 so restoring the carbohydrate in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a45970588\/muscle-building-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a45970588\/muscle-building-tips\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"muscles\" data-node-id=\"18.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">muscles<\/a> and liver that you\u2019ve lost during exercise, as well as the protein synthesis response that you want to get to repair your muscles,\u2019 explains Carpenter.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">The carbohydrate in chocolate milk is high-glycemic (raises blood glucose levels quickly), he adds, meaning it\u2019s rapid-acting and will enter your bloodstream quickly, allowing for a quick resynthesis of carbohydrate. \u2018This is why chocolate milk is a very good way of getting your muscle glycogen levels back up to normal levels compared to other methods.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">The type of protein in chocolate milk matters, too: \u2018It\u2019s a mixture of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/g65297312\/best-whey-protein-powder\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/g65297312\/best-whey-protein-powder\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"whey\" data-node-id=\"20.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">whey<\/a> and casein, which allows for a long period where muscle protein synthesis is increased because casein is slower acting.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Along with it being a good source of calcium and a relatively good source of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a65477056\/vitamin-d-deficiency-strength-gains\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a65477056\/vitamin-d-deficiency-strength-gains\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"vitamin D\" data-node-id=\"21.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin D<\/a> (plus the flavonoids from the <a says Carpenter.  <\/p>\n<p>The Bottom Line<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">While most studies on chocolate milk are relatively small, and larger, high-quality research is still needed, chocolate milk is a solid, tasty and cheap recovery drink \u2013 particularly as the sports nutrition market becomes increasingly crowded (and pricey).  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">If you\u2019re solely thinking about rehydration, plain milk may sometimes be a better choice due to the lower sugar content.
