Why is Tea still so popular?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s incredibly popular, just as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/family\/archive\/2025\/07\/tea-app-dating-data-breach-misogyny\/683712\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">polarizing<\/a>\u00a0and not, as it turns out,\u00a0a comforting drink?<\/p>\n<p>Tea.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S.-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teaforwomen.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">women-only dating service app<\/a> with more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@theteapartygirls\/photo\/7530700051123866935?_r=1&amp;_t=ZT-8u4xxKx4i4s\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four million\u00a0users<\/a>\u00a0surged\u00a0to viral status in July after gaining traction\u00a0on social media for its ability to mark men as red flags as a warning to others interested in dating them. According to research firm <a href=\"https:\/\/app.sensortower.com\/overview\/6444453051?country=CA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sensor Tower<\/a>, the app has been downloaded two million times in the last month.<\/p>\n<p>Marketed as &#8220;helping women date safe&#8221; and described as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@shey.luh\/video\/7531507857586392350\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">basically Yelp for men<\/a>,&#8221; Tea is\u00a0currently\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/tea-dating-advice\/id6444453051\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">No. 1 lifestyle download in the U.S. App Store<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 but it&#8217;s also the topic of heated debate\u00a0about safety and privacy, been called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/life-style\/sex-relationships\/article\/tea-app-dating-men-women-hsdwms7f9?region=global\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a man-shaming app<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0targeted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/MensRights\/comments\/1m6r85v\/the_tea_app_must_be_deleted\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">men&#8217;s rights groups<\/a>\u00a0and now\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teaforwomen.com\/cyberincident\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">it&#8217;s been hacked<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>San Francisco-based Tea Dating Advice\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teaforwomen.com\/cyberincident\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a> posted to its website on July 25\u00a0that some 72,000 images \u2014 including 13,000 selfies and photo IDs used for account verification \u2014 were leaked online. Then on Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/theteapartygirls\/p\/DMrGSlrJA-e\/?img_index=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tea posted<\/a> that it had suspended direct messaging after becoming aware that some messages had been accessed during the data breach, too.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Tea confirmed the data\u00a0breach in\u00a0an\u00a0email to CBC News on Thursday, adding that it&#8217;s\u00a0&#8220;working to identify any users whose personal information was involved and will be offering free identity protection services to those individuals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tea was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DMtK2ijSNjC\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly<\/a> intended to launch in Canada on Friday, according to information previously posted on the App Store, but as of this week the launch date is now\u00a0in February 2026. Tea didn&#8217;t respond to CBC&#8217;s questions about the apparent delay.<\/p>\n<p>Yet\u00a0even amid the current turmoil, Tea&#8217;s waitlist\u00a0has ballooned to 1.5 million women, all eager to join, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/theteapartygirls\/p\/DMwTCEPx3xF\/?img_index=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">company posted on Wednesday<\/a>.\u00a0A day later, Tea posted in its\u00a0Instagram stories that it had approved &#8220;well over&#8221; 800,000 women into the app that day alone.<\/p>\n<p>So, why is it so popular, despite the drama and risks?<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH | Dating app burnout:<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/default.jpg\"  alt=\"\" class=\"thumbnail\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"video-item-title\">Here\u2019s what dating app burnout looks like<\/p>\n<p>After years of swiping, have we reached the point of dating app burnout? Therapists and researchers say that might be the case.Many women feel unsafe dating online: study<\/p>\n<p>Women don&#8217;t feel safe, so\u00a0a\u00a0dating app that centres on safety is going to hit home in a big way, said\u00a0Treena Orchard, an associate professor in\u00a0the School of Health Studies at Western University in London, Ont., and the author of Sticky, Sexy, Sad: Swipe Culture and\u00a0The Darker Side of Dating Apps.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The main players in the dating app industry have not proven themselves to really double down on safety in ways that prevent certain forms of violence or misogyny, and the popularity of this app reflects how frustrating this is to women,&#8221; Orchard told CBC News.<\/p>\n<p>One in five women experience online harassment in Canada, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/canadianwomen.org\/the-facts\/online-hate-and-cyberviolence\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CAmong%20young%20adults%20aged%2018,been%20harassed%20or%20abused%20online.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Women&#8217;s Foundation<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/women-gender-equality\/campaigns\/gender-based-violence-its-not-just\/infographic-online-just-words.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Statistics Canada<\/a> notes that Indigenous women, bisexual women\u00a0and women between the ages of 15 and\u00a024 are even more at risk.<\/p>\n<p>A 2023\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2023\/02\/02\/key-findings-about-online-dating-in-the-u-s\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pew Research Center study<\/a> in the U.S. found that women were far more likely than men to say online dating wasn&#8217;t safe \u2014 57 per cent of women compared with\u00a041 per cent of men.<\/p>\n<p>Ipsos polled more than\u00a06,000 adults in the U.S. for its report. It noted that 43 per cent\u00a0of women under 50 who used dating apps said someone had continued to search for them after they said they weren&#8217;t interested, 37 per cent said they&#8217;d been called an offensive name\u00a0and 11 per cent reported they&#8217;d received threats of physical harm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH | How to spot romance scams:<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754092032_531_default.jpg\"  alt=\"\" class=\"thumbnail\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"video-item-title\">Ontario police say romance scams are on the rise. CBC\u2019s Ali Chiasson breaks down the romance red flags that Ontario police want the public to be aware of.<\/p>\n<p>There are also\u00a0multiple\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/jan\/11\/colombia-dating-apps-tourist-deaths\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">murder and rape cases <\/a>where\u00a0perpetrators have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/07\/29\/us\/danueal-drayton-dating-websites-new-york-california\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">used\u00a0dating websites<\/a> to find victims. In March, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.calgary.ca\/police-warn-of-man-using-online-dating-apps-to-victimize-women\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Calgary police issued a warning<\/a> of a man using online dating apps\u00a0to sexually assault women.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the RCMP has issued warnings about romance scams, where victims are contacted on<a href=\"https:\/\/rcmp.ca\/en\/gazette\/just-facts-romance-scams\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> dating apps<\/a>\u00a0for the purposes of obtaining their money.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Marking men with red flags is helpful in alerting women to a known offender or violent person,&#8221; Orchard said.<\/p>\n<p>App facing backlash from men, who want it shut down<\/p>\n<p>Tea allows users to find &#8220;verified green flag men,&#8221; run background checks, identify potential catfish, check for a criminal history and verify that a man isn&#8217;t a sex offender, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teaforwomen.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the app&#8217;s website<\/a>. Users can also share experiences and anonymous dating reviews.<\/p>\n<p>But one problem, Orchard said, is that the app also fosters conversations\u00a0about more superficial things, like a\u00a0man&#8217;s appearance, body odour, conversation skills or romantic prowess.<\/p>\n<p>And then there&#8217;s the\u00a0backlash. Cleveland lawyer\u00a0Aaron Minc, who\u00a0specializes in cases involving online defamation and harassment, told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tea-app-data-breach-leak-4chan-c95d5bb2cabe9d1b8ec0ca8903503b29\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Associated Press<\/a>\u00a0that his firm has received\u00a0hundreds of calls from people upset about what&#8217;s been posted about them on Tea.<\/p>\n<p>A campaign on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/MensRights\/comments\/1m6r85v\/the_tea_app_must_be_deleted\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">men&#8217;s rights subreddit<\/a> urges people to report Tea, saying it &#8220;must be deleted.&#8221;\u00a0Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/MensRights\/comments\/1mbuket\/its_time_to_get_serious_and_shut_down_tea\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">campaign<\/a> in the same subreddit\u00a0outlines a six-step action plan to get Tea shut down, including pursuing civil lawsuits.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s just an echo chamber for women to shit on men, gossip or spread rumours,&#8221; posted someone in the comments of one of the Reddit campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, people are legally allowed to provide opinions about other people in public forums, and truth is an absolute defence in defamation cases, said lawyer Tina Yang, a partner in the Toronto office of law firm\u00a0Goldblatt Partners LLP who specializes in privacy law.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH | Lawyer warns against using Facebook to vent:<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754092032_829_default.jpg\"  alt=\"\" class=\"thumbnail\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"video-item-title\">Lawyer warns against using Facebook to vent<\/p>\n<p>Charles Daoust, an Ottawa lawyer who specializes in defamation cases, said exaggerating or not being completely truthful can be dangerous when posting about others online.<\/p>\n<p>What you can&#8217;t do is breach someone&#8217;s privacy, Yang said, and what&#8217;s considered private is contextual. So it&#8217;s possible someone could sue over what was written about them on Tea, she said, pointing to\u00a0legal precedent where\u00a0people have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawtimesnews.com\/practice-areas\/litigation\/law-firm-successful-in-defamation-claim-arising-from-former-clients-google-review\/382169\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">successfully sued for defamation\u00a0over negative Google reviews<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also the potential for criminal consequences if the posts meet the bar for\u00a0harassment, Yang said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I, personally, would not post on Tea,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The potential for things to go awry is pretty high.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The tea on Tea&#8217;s data breach<\/p>\n<p>Applicants have to be approved in order to join, Tea explained online. The process once required\u00a0selfies and government photo ID to verify the users, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teaforwomen.com\/cyberincident\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">it said<\/a>, &#8220;as an added layer of safety to ensure that only women were signing up for the app.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The company said it\u00a0removed the ID requirement in 2023, but data that was stored before February 2024, when Tea migrated to a more secure system, was accessed in the breach.\u00a0According to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.404media.co\/women-dating-safety-app-tea-breached-users-ids-posted-to-4chan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">investigation by 404 Media<\/a>, users on the notorious image-based bulletin board\u00a04chan claimed to have discovered an exposed database, and it posted women&#8217;s photos and information online.<\/p>\n<p>A website viewed by CBC News lists what it says are the Tea selfies and lets people rank them by order of\u00a0attractiveness. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/family\/archive\/2025\/07\/tea-app-dating-data-breach-misogyny\/683712\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Atlantic<\/a>, 4chan users also created\u00a0a map that claimed to link Tea users to certain locations, and told people viewing it to &#8220;enjoy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A drawing of a cup of tea and words that say Tea Dating Service\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/tea-app-data-breach.JPG\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.4993646759847523\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>At least two class-action lawsuits have been filed against Tea as of Monday, according to Business Insider. (Dado Ruvic\/Illustration\/Reuters)<\/p>\n<p>At least two class-action lawsuits have been filed against Tea\u00a0as of Monday, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/tea-dating-app-two-class-action-lawsuits-following-data-breach-2025-7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Business Insider<\/a>.\u00a0One, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/26035306-reyes-v-tea-dating-advice-complaint\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">filed by Tea user Griselda Reyes<\/a>, claims she &#8220;has anxiety and increased concerns for the loss of privacy, as well as anxiety over the impact of cybercriminals accessing, using and selling [her]\u00a0private Information.<\/p>\n<p>Yang said she hopes that risk would make potential users of the app think carefully before they download it.\u00a0Orchard, too, said she thinks users should\u00a0avoid Tea, at least\u00a0until the security system and data breach protocol are fixed.<\/p>\n<p>Tea hadn&#8217;t posted any further updates\u00a0about the data breach as of Friday afternoon. But it did post a promotional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DM0dRHmpAYB\/?igsh=MXBsM3RnZzE2NHJ3aQ%3D%3D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">video\u00a0on Instagram<\/a>\u00a0advertising its features.<\/p>\n<p>The comments were almost entirely from people asking Tea to approve them, so they could join the app.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><script async src=\"\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s incredibly popular, just as polarizing\u00a0and not, as it turns out,\u00a0a comforting drink?
