Kathy Hochul and the <a href=\"http:\/\/mta.info\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MTA<\/a> announced on Monday a new fleet of railcars will come to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/nyc-transit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Metro-North Railroad<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The state-run agency\u2019s finance committee approved the purchase of over 300 new M-9A railcars for both commuter rail lines that bring passengers into and out of NYC. Ultimately, the MTA wants to buy 2,000 new rail cars worth about $10.9 billion as part of its capital plan for 2025-2029.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Officials said 160 cars will go to the LIRR, and 156 cars will go to Metro-North. The modern cars will replace the MTA\u2019s aging fleet on its busy commuter routes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137774446\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/54608699691_41d008ab18_k.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" title=\"MTA to purchase over 300 New York-built modern commuter railcars 2\"  \/>Rendering of a M-9A passenger railcar.<\/p>\n<p>The new fleet will provide various features and amenities, including glass windows, USB charging ports, and accessibility improvements, including automatic doors for bathrooms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Yorkers deserve a fast, reliable and comfortable transit system. We are delivering that today through the purchase of modern railcars for the LIRR and Metro-North fleets,\u201d Hochul said. \u201cThe commuter rails are a lifeline for riders in one of the world\u2019s largest and busiest transit systems \u2014 this is how we continue to achieve record on-time performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officials said the railcars will operate in LIRR electric territories and on the Metro-North Hudson and Harlem lines. They explained that the new cars are needed to replace Metro-North\u2019s M-3 cars, which are beyond their service life. <\/p>\n<p>The cars will also allow the LIRR to retire its M-3 cars that have been operating alongside the opening of busy Grand Central Madison.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to record on-time performance and increased service with the opening of Grand Central Madison, LIRR ridership continues to explode,\u201d said LIRR President Rob Free. \u201cOur customers deserve modern railcars, which will result in even more reliable service and improve the customer experience for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137774443\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/54608896379_93c7b0add0_k.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" title=\"MTA to purchase over 300 New York-built modern commuter railcars 3\"  \/>Rendering of the M-9A railcar\u2019s seating. The vehicles will be built at the French company\u2019s Plant 4 in Hornell, NY, sparking \u201chundreds of new jobs,\u201d state officials said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to an article in the <a href=\"https:\/\/rbj.net\/2025\/06\/24\/alstom-hornell-mta-railcar-manufacturing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rochester Business Journal,<\/a> Alstom\u2019s 135,000-square-foot plant is the largest passenger train facility in the country, making stainless steel car body shells. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe MTA is the biggest railcar purchaser in North America, and we are using innovative methods to bring down costs and delivery time,\u201d Tim Mulligan, chief of the MTA\u2019s rolling stock program, said. \u201cBy building on the reliable design of previous cars, we were able to work with the contractor to get things done better, faster, and cheaper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alstom will start delivering the cars in 2029.
