Schumer, Gillibrand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Queens Councilwoman <a href=\"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/district-22\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tiffany Caban<\/a> and Queens Assemblywoman <a href=\"https:\/\/assembly.state.ny.us\/mem\/Claire-Valdez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Claire Valdez<\/a> were among dozens of protesters arrested Friday at a pro-Palestinian demonstration at the Manhattan offices of New York Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, according to city and police officials.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstration, organized by the Jewish Voice for Peace organization, was held to protest Schumer and Gillibrand for recently <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bernie-sanders-israeli-weapons-sale-democrats-gaza-58945751c7f88c1434a4be86e11af167\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voting against a measure<\/a> that would halt U.S. arms shipments to Israel amid the war in Gaza. Their votes came as Israel \u2014 which is waging a war to eradicate Hamas in retaliation for the terrorist group\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/October_7_attacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oct. 7, 2023, attack<\/a> \u2014 has faced international condemnation for blocking critical aid, like food and medicine, from getting into Gaza, where the United Nations say starvation, especially among children, is becoming widespread.<\/p>\n<p>Caban got her hands zip-tied before being escorted onto a decommissioned MTA bus with other protesters after refusing calls from NYPD officers to disperse from the lobby of the senators\u2019 office building on Third Ave., Caban\u2019s spokeswoman, Arden Dressner Levy, confirmed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"People protesting with Jewish Voices for Peace occupy the lobby of Sen. (Barry Williams\/New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>Levy said Caban, a democratic socialist who represents <a href=\"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/district-22\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">western Queens in the City Council<\/a>, was taken into custody for \u201cparticipating in civil disobedience\u201d to demand that \u201cIsrael stop starving Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsraeli attacks in Gaza have created the highest rate of child amputees in the world,\u201d Levy said. \u201cIsrael is blocking food, medicine and baby formula from entering Gaza. Israel is systematically destroying Palestinian life and society, and Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand are writing the checks. (Barry Williams\/New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>Valdez, a fellow democratic socialist who also reps western Queens, was also put in zip ties after being arrested.<\/p>\n<p>While being led onto the bus, Valdez told reporters the U.S. and Israel must stop \u201cstarving Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny politician who\u2019s not doing something about it is failing New Yorkers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Actor Sara Ramirez occupies the lobby of U.S. Sen. (Barry Williams\/New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>Before the arrests, protesters chanted pro-Palestinian slogans and banged loudly on pots for about 45 minutes. The two Queens politicians sat on the lobby floor chanting with the other protesters, as cops lingered at the back of the lobby.<\/p>\n<p>After nearly 45 minutes, police officers announced that the protesters had to leave. After another 45, the arrests began.<\/p>\n<p>The protesters who left when warned, including City Council members Jennifer Gutierrez and Alexa Avil\u00e9s, remained outside chanting throughout the arrests.<\/p>\n<p>According to Jewish Voice for Peace, there were about 200 protesters and nearly 50 arrests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren are dying or being starved,\u201d Gutierrez said. \u201cAnd this is all constructed by us, and we\u2019re supporting it, and we\u2019re paying for it, and children are dying. This is something that has gone far more beyond a land dispute, and we\u2019re supporting it, we\u2019re paying for it. So we\u2019re here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you look at what\u2019s happening to the children and families in Gaza, arrest is nothing compared to what is happening there,\u201d Avil\u00e9s said. \u201cIt didn\u2019t even cross my mind. I know New Yorkers are heartbroken. Americans are heartbroken. This is not what we should be using our dollars for. We want an end to the war. We want peace. We want people to be able to live with dignity. Obviously, it\u2019s all of it. It\u2019s return of the hostages, an end to the war. It\u2019s all of it. It\u2019s not one group or another, but it\u2019s using our taxpayer dollars for good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither Schumer nor Gillibrand were at their offices at the time of the arrests.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Schumer said,\u00a0\u201cThe humanitarian crisis in Gaza is heartbreaking and unacceptable.
