{"id":111956,"date":"2025-08-02T03:32:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-02T03:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/111956\/"},"modified":"2025-08-02T03:32:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-02T03:32:09","slug":"watch-shocking-video-shows-storm-water-swamping-streets-trapping-staten-island-residents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/111956\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch: Shocking video shows storm water swamping streets, trapping Staten Island residents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IM2BG4R6KBBY7KDEB6YAFIF6R4\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 During yesterday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/weather\/2025\/07\/staten-island-hit-with-severe-thunderstorms-thursday.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">severe thunderstorm<\/a>, heavy rainfall overwhelmed storm sewers along College Avenue in Westerleigh, causing swamped streets and submerged vehicles. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KTFWRR2ARVCTDNLO4TJV7VVIAM\">The ferocity of the storm prompted New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to declare a state of emergency for several New York counties, including Staten Island. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FESAQNV7K5BKPO7JX4PDYJMUKM\">As stormwater sewers got backed up, floodwater accumulated near College and Crystal avenues. Four to five cars were trapped on the flooded road. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RSU6KVOU6JBIRAO6TSEIUG6IGY\">A video obtained from a resident (above) showed the storm\u2019s rapid escalation, as water pooled into her vehicle and left her stranded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IGLLO32F35COHNECF5K6E6MFDA\">Tow trucks arrived on the scene to remove the stranded cars. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TRRRXTMQ4NCA7GGMKNZZPTKCVY\">\u201cYesterday\u2019s sudden and intense rainstorm is a prime example of how our changing climate is bringing more extreme weather,\u201d said a spokesperson for the NYC Department of Environmental Protection. \u201cWhile some neighborhoods and roadways \u2014 including areas of Staten Island \u2014 experienced flooding, much of the city\u2019s drainage system performed well, thanks to DEP\u2019s prioritized maintenance work and targeted investments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OWF7TAC2H5GCHHZYKGQVZ263CY\">The city\u2019s sewer system was designed to handle 1.75 inches of rain per hour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PYPFHYYWAVE5RBW2BDEHKO7DB4\">But yesterday\u2019s storm blew past that capacity, with some areas of Staten Island, including Westerleigh, experiencing a total of 2.66 inches of rainfall. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QXQGEPOMWJGFDEDPRSV5NRDN44\">\u201cPrior to the storm, DEP crews inspected flood-prone areas to ensure drainage infrastructure was clear,\u201d said the spokesperson. \u201cDuring and after the storm, teams responded quickly to relieve street and highway flooding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7GVDBWVHIJHG5KDXFOU26HR4WA\">Still, city officials are eying longer-term changes to deal with intense rain events, officials said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6XFCNNZGGBHYDCFHLBX4TZITRY\">\u201cThis intersection (at College and Collfield avenues) is located within our Clove Lakes Drainage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2023\/03\/nyc-installs-catch-basins-in-hurricane-ida-decimated-neighborhood-on-staten-island.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2023\/03\/nyc-installs-catch-basins-in-hurricane-ida-decimated-neighborhood-on-staten-island.html\">Study<\/a>, which is a priority for the agency,\u201d said the spokesperson. \u201cWe are currently evaluating solutions for the area and will initiate new projects in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P5QCMX4NDFF5JIUNYJKYLAKQ7U\">As for the effect of this storm on residents, Edward Chavez, who lives on College Avenue, said the water was up to his waist during the storm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S5KMELNNYVA7XBN643H2GQSLVI\">Several cars took on water, and residents at the intersection of Collfield and College avenues were seen using a water vacuum to remove water from their cars. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6RHDSICDWVATRJSRWGVYGSKGAI\">Some residents took to the streets to unclog the sewers. One photo showed resident Dan Dowd using a shovel to clean out a storm sewer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"67VS6PAWENCC7G6CDLLHLJAUSM\">Residents Kena and Todd Wohl, who are currently renovating their house, found that their storage pod was moved a couple of feet by the flood.<\/p>\n<p>If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
