{"id":112,"date":"2025-06-20T20:12:05","date_gmt":"2025-06-20T20:12:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/112\/"},"modified":"2025-06-20T20:12:05","modified_gmt":"2025-06-20T20:12:05","slug":"danny-boyles-28-years-later-bites-off-5-8m-in-previews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/112\/","title":{"rendered":"Danny Boyle&#8217;s &#8217;28 Years Later&#8217; Bites Off $5.8M in Previews"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tUniversal\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/train-dragon\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How to Train Your Dragon<\/a> won the Juneteenth holiday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/box-office\/\" id=\"auto-tag_box-office_1\" data-tag=\"box-office\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">box office<\/a> race on Thursday with $9.7 million in ticket sales as it heads into its second weekend with an early domestic haul of nearly $125 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe live-action remake of DreamWorks Animation\u2019s celebrated 2010 animated film is confident it will stay atop the chart in its sophomore outing despite the entry of two new summer event pics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/danny-boyle\/\" id=\"auto-tag_danny-boyle_1\" data-tag=\"danny-boyle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Danny Boyle<\/a>\u2018s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/28-years-later\/\" id=\"auto-tag_28-years-later_1\" data-tag=\"28-years-later\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">28 Years Later<\/a> and Pixar\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/elio\/\" id=\"auto-tag_elio_1\" data-tag=\"elio\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elio<\/a>, both of which took advantage of the holiday by starting previews early in the day. (How to Train Your Dragon has a huge advantage in playing in Imax cinemas.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/28-years-later-lands-home-sony-1235804926\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boyle\u2019s zombie sequel<\/a>, from Sony, is reporting a preview gross of $5.8 million, enough to place second on Thursday \u2014 at least unofficially (previews grosses are ultimately folded into the opening-day gross, or in this instance, Friday\u2019s haul). Sony is suggesting a weekend opening the $28 million range, while tracking shows Boyle\u2019s film coming in at $30 million or more. Others think it could scare up as much as $40 million to $45 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSo far, however, 28 Years Later, isn\u2019t going over so well with audiences despite glowing reviews. Presently, the Rotten Tomatoes critics\u2019 score is 92 percent, while the audience score is only 69 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t28 Years Later \u2014 the first in a planned trilogy \u2014 reunites Boyle with writer Alex Garland 25 years after 28 Days hit big screen and became a cult classic. Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O\u2019Connell, Alfie Williams and Ralph Fiennes star in the pic, which is set nearly three decades after the events of the first film.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Elio-Main-2-2025.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"730\" width=\"1296\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDisney\/Pixar<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/elio-review-pixar-disney-zoe-saldana-brad-garrett-1236292709\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elio<\/a> \u2014 an original film about a young boy whose wish to travel to outer space and interact with aliens comes true \u2014 earned $3 million from Thursday previews and select special access Wednesday screenings. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/box-office-28-years-later-box-office-elio-1236293713\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tracking shows the animated film opening<\/a> to $30 million in North America, although Pixar is braced for the possibility that the movie could suffer the worst 3-day opening ever for the storied animation studio behind Elemental ($29.6 million) in June 2023 and its very first film, 1995\u2019s Toy Story ($29.1 million), not adjusted for inflation. (Toy Story opened over Thanksgiving, and amassed $39 million over the long five-day holiday weekend.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAt the time, Elemental\u2018s opening was called nothing short of a debacle, yet it turned into sleeper hit on its way to earning nearly $500 million globally. Pixar and parent company Disney, are confident that Elio will have the same sort of staying power throughout the summer when kids are sprung from school. So far, Elio is graced with a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">better critics score on Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> than Elemental. So far, there\u2019s no audience score on RT.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPixar has been struggling to find its footing in a world where original animated stories don\u2019t open to the heights they once did \u2014 think north of $70 million \u2014 in the post-pandemic world. And during the pandemic years, then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek decided to send three Pixar titles straight to Disney+ domestically, including Turning Red, Luca and the Oscar-winning Soul, a decision rivals said taught families to wait to watch a film at home.
