{"id":112261,"date":"2025-08-02T06:17:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-02T06:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/112261\/"},"modified":"2025-08-02T06:17:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-02T06:17:08","slug":"rockies-walk-off-hr-finishes-wild-17-16-win-over-pirates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/112261\/","title":{"rendered":"Rockies&#8217; walk-off HR finishes wild 17-16 win over Pirates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DENVER &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/col\/colorado-rockies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Colorado Rockies<\/a> outfielder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/42462\/brenton-doyle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brenton Doyle<\/a> had a hard time describing what had just taken place after he delivered the crowning blow in perhaps the wildest game of the major league season.<\/p>\n<p>Doyle hit a two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to cap Colorado&#8217;s stunning comeback from a nine-run, first-inning deficit in a <a href=\"https:\/\/preview.espn.com\/mlb\/boxscore\/_\/gameId\/401696556\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">17-16 victory<\/a> over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/pit\/pittsburgh-pirates\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pittsburgh Pirates<\/a> on Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Honestly, pretty speechless,&#8221; Doyle told reporters. &#8220;It&#8217;s hard to put into words. Just so proud of everyone in this clubhouse, never giving up. Man, what a win.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Colorado won despite allowing nine runs during a first inning in which Pittsburgh&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/39712\/oneil-cruz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oneil Cruz<\/a> hit a grand slam and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/28701\/andrew-mccutchen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew McCutchen<\/a> had a three-run homer.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"320\" width=\"570\"\/>The Rockies&#8217; Brenton Doyle, third from left, celebrates with his teammates after hitting a two-run, walk-off home run against the Pirates.\u00a0AP Photo\/David Zalubowski<\/p>\n<p>The Rockies are the first team to overcome a nine-run, 1st-inning deficit since <a href=\"https:\/\/preview.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/cle\/cleveland-guardians\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cleveland<\/a> on August 23, 2006 against <a href=\"https:\/\/preview.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/kc\/kansas-city-royals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kansas City<\/a>, according to ESPN Research.<\/p>\n<p>The Rockies are also the first team to win despite allowing 15 or more runs since the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"c6df06f6-785d-3900-4935-5fd13742e2ee\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/bos\/boston-red-sox\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boston Red Sox<\/a> beat the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"4fa2cf46-09fc-255f-74a1-2a8857b0e671\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/tex\/texas-rangers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Texas Rangers<\/a> 19-17 in August 2008.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Getting down nine in the first, it&#8217;s tough to come back from, but we kept the energy high,&#8221; Doyle said. &#8220;We kept the fight in us. Oh my God, what a game.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Colorado scored one run in the bottom of the first, three in the third, two in the fourth and four in the fifth to cut Pittsburgh&#8217;s lead to 15-10. The Rockies still trailed 16-10 before scoring two runs in the eighth and five in the ninth.<\/p>\n<p>After Pittsburgh&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/39801\/dennis-santana\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dennis Santana<\/a> started the ninth by striking out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4905919\/ezequiel-tovar\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ezequiel Tovar<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4416591\/hunter-goodman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hunter Goodman<\/a>&#8216;s 425-foot homer reduced the Pirates&#8217; lead to 16-13. Santana then walked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4619460\/jordan-beck\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jordan Beck<\/a> and allowed an RBI triple to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4917759\/warming-bernabel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Warming Bernabel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/36485\/thairo-estrada\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thairo Estrada<\/a> singled home Bernabel before Doyle delivered a 406-foot shot to end the game.<\/p>\n<p>The events in Colorado highlighted a night full of offense across the majors. According to StatsPerform, Friday marked the first time since June 23, 1930, that three major league games on the same day had at least 25 combined runs.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/mia\/miami-marlins\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Miami Marlins<\/a> erased an early 6-0 deficit and scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/nyy\/new-york-yankees\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Yankees<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/boxscore\/_\/gameId\/401696553\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">13-12<\/a>.
