We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 huxBsk\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>The world has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/health-and-fitness\/matcha-health-benefits-b2775853.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">developed a thirst for matcha<\/a> \u2013 a bright green <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/japanese\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Japanese<\/a> drink that&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/matcha-health-benefits-coffee-b2749510.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sought after for its health <\/a>benefits and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/caffeine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">caffeine<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>However, the drink of choice for many may have a downside. Not only is its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/asia\/japan\/matcha-shortage-japan-global-supply-heatwave-b2797101.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">popularity drying up global supplies<\/a>, but drinking too much of it could contribute to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/iron\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">iron<\/a> deficiency. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/nutritionists\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nutritionists<\/a> warn the green lattes can affect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/iron\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">iron<\/a> absorption and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/vegetarians\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vegetarians<\/a> are at a higher risk than meat eaters. <\/p>\n<p>Matcha is made from the green <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/tea\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tea<\/a> plant, Camellia Sinensis, which is ground into a powder. Because it\u2019s grown in the shade the plant produces more chlorophyll, which not only gives it a deep green colour but also means it contains more nutrients. <\/p>\n<p>Rob Hobson, a nutritionist and author of Unprocess Your Family Life, explains the drink does have health benefits. \u201cIt contains polyphenols which protects the body against oxidative damage. So, it helps to reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/inflammation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflammation<\/a> which then helps to protect against chronic diseases,\u201d he told the Independent. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/iStock-2199126862.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Drinking too much matcha could contribute to an iron deficiency, nutritionists warn\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Drinking too much matcha could contribute to an iron deficiency, nutritionists warn (Getty\/iStock)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it contains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/caffeine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">caffeine<\/a> it helps with mental focus. But it also contains L-theanine which helps to lessen that jittery edge that you get from caffeine,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p>Research has also suggested these polyphenols in matcha can reduce the risk of heart disease. But the same health boosting polyphenols also make it harder for the body to absorb iron. <\/p>\n<p>Gunter Kuhnle, a professor of nutrition and food science at the University of Reading explained matcha <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/tea\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tea<\/a> can affect iron absorption by binding the (non-haem) iron that is found in many plant foods \u2013 such as lentils, leafy greens and tofu. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt contains the compounds catechins and tannins \u2013 which are both polyphenols \u2013 that can bind to iron in the digestive tracts, and this stops them from being taken up by the body,\u201d Professor Kuhnle told the Independent. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/iStock-2179940383.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The same health boosting polyphenols that make it good for your heart also make it harder for the body to absorb iron\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>The same health boosting polyphenols that make it good for your heart also make it harder for the body to absorb iron (Getty\/iStock)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese complexes then pass through the gut and are not useful for the body \u2013 this can reduce iron uptake by up to 50 per cent, but this varies a lot between individuals and depends on the timing of the meal and the type of food,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p>He explained there is a similar problem with green tea because it also contains high levels of polyphenols. Although rare, in one instance a 48-year-old man became anaemic from excessive green tea consumption Professor Kuhnle said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Hobson stressed that you don\u2019t need to worry if you have a balanced diet, but warned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/vegetarians\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vegetarians<\/a> are at a greater risk. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because it only affects non-haem iron which is in tofu and lentils and not haem iron which is found in meat. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are vegan or vegetarian and you are relying on lentils, leafy green and tofu for your iron, then you might want to avoid drinking matcha with your meals because it can inhibit iron absorption in the gut,\u201d Mr Hobson said. <\/p>\n<p>He also stressed that if you are low in iron anyway and take iron supplements, you should avoid taking these at the same time as drinking a matcha. <\/p>\n<p>An iron deficiency, also called anaemia, can cause tiredness, shortness of breath, paler skin, headaches and heart palpitations, according to the NHS. <\/p>\n<p>Low iron is common among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/teenage-girls\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">teenage girls<\/a>, vegans and vegetarians with a study by Lund University in Sweden finding 38 per cent of participants who were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/teenage-girls\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">teenage girls<\/a> and 70 per cent of participants who were vegetarian or vegan, affected by the deficiency. <\/p>\n<p>If you want to reap the health benefits of matcha, in addition to not drinking it at mealtimes, make sure to avoid adding a lot of syrup or cream.
