{"id":112396,"date":"2025-08-02T07:30:21","date_gmt":"2025-08-02T07:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/112396\/"},"modified":"2025-08-02T07:30:21","modified_gmt":"2025-08-02T07:30:21","slug":"canadian-job-vacancies-fell-to-a-near-8-year-low-amid-hiring-freezes-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/112396\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian job vacancies fell to a near 8-year low amid hiring freezes &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Canadian job market showed more signs that it may be cooling off as companies slow or freeze hiring plans, with Statistics Canada reporting that job vacancies are at the lowest point in almost eight years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>That comes as the Canadian job market continues to adapt to a rapidly changing landscape, as the trade war and U.S. President <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/search\/donald%20trump%20tariffs\/?type=news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump\u2019s tariff<\/a> policies force some <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11292901\/business-sentiment-bank-of-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">businesses to pivot in order to help minimize the impacts, including higher costs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Companies are mostly focused on maintaining their current business operations rather than setting long-term goals to expand due to the \u201cuncertainty\u201d echoed by many economists and policymakers surrounding international trade \u2014 including a <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11313402\/what-happens-on-aug-1-canada-trade-deal-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pending deal between Canada and the U.S.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re an organization and you don\u2019t have clarity on what your business is going to look like tomorrow or next month or next quarter, you\u2019re not going to be risking adding any type of cost into the businesses,\u201d says Cal Jungwirth, director of permanent placement services at Robert Half.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not saying no one is hiring out there, but as a general trend, yeah, until organizations have a better feel of what the economy is going to look like, they\u2019re going to continue to be very cautious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Canada\u2019s jobless rate ticks up as Trump\u2019s tariffs cause cracks in labour market'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/ONLINE_STILL_TARIFFS_JOB_NUMBERS.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:44<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCanada\u2019s jobless rate ticks up as Trump\u2019s tariffs cause cracks in labour market\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/250731\/dq250731b-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Statistics Canada released new job market data<\/a>, which some experts say reflects the broader business sentiment surrounding the trade war.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/national.jpg\" alt=\"For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.<\/p>\n<p>According to the agency, the number of job vacancies, meaning job openings listed by businesses that have yet to be filled, fell in May of 2025 by 20,400, or 4.1 per cent, compared to the previous month, and that\u2019s after a 3.4 per cent drop in April.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to the same month in 2024, the total number of job vacancies in May of 2025 fell by nearly 16 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Statistics Canada also says that with May\u2019s reported job vacancies totalling 478,200, it is the lowest level recorded since October 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOrganizations are not hiring at the levels that they were to begin the year, and we\u2019re not seeing right now just simple turnover or churn,\u201d says Jungwirth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo when an individual stays (at a job) where they\u2019re at, versus if they were looking to leave and make a move, when they leave, that opens up a vacancy and creates jobs in the marketplace. If they don\u2019t leave their current role, the vacancy is not created. You\u2019re planning for the workforce of your future, you have a sense of what your attrition might be, people leaving or layoffs, and then the workers you want to add,\u201d says senior economist Brendon Bernard at Indeed.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI definitely think this is part of a relatively pessimistic environment going on in Canada right now. It\u2019s a difficult market for job seekers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bernard also says the consistent reports showing lower job vacancies in recent months is \u201cnot a new trend,\u201d and that the trade war creating this \u201cpessimistic environment\u201d felt by some Canadian businesses may not be the only factor contributing to the declines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the numbers (of job vacancies) have slipped over the past few months, they\u2019ve also come down a lot just in general from their peaks in 2022, and the job vacancy rate is now a bit below where it was pre-pandemic,\u201d says Bernard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think 2022 was an exceptional period for the economy and the labour market in a lot of different ways.
