{"id":112606,"date":"2025-08-02T09:26:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-02T09:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/112606\/"},"modified":"2025-08-02T09:26:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-02T09:26:14","slug":"1-horse-dead-several-injured-at-welland-ont-farm-in-disturbing-animal-cruelty-police-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/112606\/","title":{"rendered":"1 horse dead, several injured at Welland, Ont., farm in &#8216;disturbing&#8217; animal cruelty, police say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One horse is dead\u00a0and several others injured\u00a0in Welland, Ont., in\u00a0what Niagara regional police are calling a &#8220;disturbing act of animal cruelty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Staff at a boarding farm found several horses with injuries &#8220;consistent with cuts and stab wounds&#8221; on Thursday morning, police said\u00a0in a release\u00a0Friday.<\/p>\n<p>They said that of the eight horses, one was found dead at the scene, another was moved to an emergency veterinary clinic\u00a0in Guelph, Ont.,\u00a0and the others were treated at the farm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CBC News has confirmed the farm is Eagle Wing Ranch at\u00a0426 Buchner Rd. The ranch&#8217;s website says it&#8217;s a &#8220;family-owned and operated hunter\/jumper facility.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Const. Richard Hingley told CBC News that the horses were at the ranch for &#8220;several reasons,&#8221; including for riding and shows. Other horses were pets &#8220;to other people who don&#8217;t have farms,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Janssen, who&#8217;s with the\u00a0ranch, said they were\u00a0&#8220;reeling&#8221; and &#8220;grieving,&#8221; and asked for privacy.<\/p>\n<p>In a Facebook post, Janssen said there were &#8220;no words to describe the shock and devastation our barn staff and family felt as yesterday unfolded.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It felt like a terrible dream you were begging to wake up from. The grief is heavy as we mourn the loss of a very special horse and the injuries of 7 others,&#8221; Janssen&#8217;s post said.<\/p>\n<p>Veterinarian called to the ranch<\/p>\n<p>Matt Nugent, a veterinarian with\u00a0Nugent Veterinary Services, was at the ranch\u00a0on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0told CBC News all the horses had a similar injury in the same spot \u2014 the left side of the neck\u00a0&#8220;where the jugular would be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nugent\u00a0said he was summoned to the scene at around 7 a.m. on Thursday. Initially,\u00a0the call was only for the deceased horse, but while with the ranch owners, more and more animals were found injured.<\/p>\n<p>Hingley\u00a0said he had never seen any &#8220;personal attack&#8221; on horses.
