While the next major iOS update will bring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/services-and-software\/ios-18-vs-ios-26-heres-what-liquid-glass-brings-to-your-iphone\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"c-shortcodeLink c-shortcodeLink-active\" target=\"_blank\">Liquid Glass<\/a> and more to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/mobile\/best-iphone\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"c-shortcodeLink c-shortcodeLink-active\" target=\"_blank\">iPhone<\/a>, iOS 18.6 doesn&#8217;t change much on your device. Instead of new features, the update is filled with about two dozen bug and security fixes, including a patch for a flaw that could be actively exploited.  <\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"c-shortcodeImage_imageContainer\">  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" alt=\"Tech Tips\" height=\"617.3049645390072\" width=\"768\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"u-speakableText-p2\">You can download iOS 18.6 by going to <strong>Settings<\/strong>, then tapping <strong>General<\/strong>. Next, select<strong>\u00a0Software Update<\/strong>, then tap\u00a0<strong>Update Now<\/strong>\u00a0and follow the prompts on your screen.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what iOS 18.6 brings to your iPhone.<\/p>\n<p>This update patches a zero-day flaw and other issues<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/124147\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Apple&#8217;s security notes<\/a>, iOS 18.6 fixes about two dozen security issues and bugs. But one issue in WebKit, Apple&#8217;s in-house-developed internet browser engine used in Safari, could compromise your system and is being tracked as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cve.org\/CVERecord?id=CVE-2025-6558\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CVE-2025-6558<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a vulnerability in open source code and Apple Software is among the affected projects,&#8221; Apple wrote in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/124147\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">security notes<\/a>\u00a0for this issue. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cve.org\/About\/Overview\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CVE Program<\/a>, which helps identify, define and catalog cybersecurity risks, lists the severity of this issue as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cve.org\/CVERecord?id=CVE-2025-6558\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">high<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This bug was identified by a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/threat-analysis-group\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Google&#8217;s Threat Analysis Group<\/a>, and Google wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/chromereleases.googleblog.com\/2025\/07\/stable-channel-update-for-desktop_15.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">July 15<\/a> that it is aware that an exploit for this bug exists in the wild. So you should download iOS 18.6 immediately to protect your device.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Are there any new features in iOS 18.6?<\/p>\n<p>After downloading and testing iOS 18.6 during the beta cycle, I found no new features or noticeable changes in the update. That&#8217;s not surprising considering Apple&#8217;s iOS release schedule over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Apple announced iOS 18 at WWDC 2024 and released\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/services-and-software\/you-should-update-your-iphone-to-ios-17-6-now-before-ios-18s-release\/#link={%22role%22:%22standard%22,%22href%22:%22https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/services-and-software\/you-should-update-your-iphone-to-ios-17-6-now-before-ios-18s-release\/%22,%22target%22:%22%22,%22absolute%22:%22%22,%22linkText%22:%22iOS 17.6%22}\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">iOS 17.6<\/a>\u00a0more than a month later in July. That update was filled with more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/120909#link={%22role%22:%22standard%22,%22href%22:%22https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/120909%22,%22target%22:%22%22,%22absolute%22:%22%22,%22linkText%22:%2230 important bug fixes and security patches%22}\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">30 important bug fixes and security patches<\/a>, but no new features. Apple recommended that everyone download the update at the time, and it was the last major iOS 17 update before the release of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/services-and-software\/your-guide-to-apples-ios-18-iphopne-software\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">iOS 18<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Apple did the same thing in July 2023 when it released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/mobile\/ios-16-6-you-should-download-the-iphone-update-now\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">iOS 16.6<\/a>. When the tech giant released that update, it was focused on bug fixes and security patches. After that, the next major iOS release was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/mobile\/ios-17-exciting-new-features-iphone-users-should-prepare-for\/#link=%7B%22role%22:%22standard%22,%22href%22:%22https:\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/services-and-software\/ios-17-public-beta-is-out-and-im-excited-about-these-new-iphone-features\/%22,%22target%22:%22_blank%22,%22absolute%22:%22%22,%22linkText%22:%22iOS%2017%22%7D\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">iOS 17<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Apple is likely shifting gears and focusing more on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/services-and-software\/liquid-glass-new-photos-app-and-all-the-other-ios-26-features-coming-to-your-iphone\/#link=%7B%22label%22:%22Liquid%20Glass,%20New%20Photos%20App%20and%20All%20the%20Other%20iOS%2026%20Features%20Coming%20to%20Your%20iPhone%22,%22assetType%22:%22article%22,%22uuid%22:%22be34e288-7ac1-4f4c-bd4f-293355a3d43c%22,%22slug%22:%22liquid-glass-new-photos-app-and-all-the-other-ios-26-features-coming-to-your-iphone%22,%22linkText%22:%22iOS%2026%22,%22href%22:%22https:\/cms.cnet.com\/content\/article\/be34e288-7ac1-4f4c-bd4f-293355a3d43c\/version\/us%22,%22role%22:%22content_link%22,%22edition%22:%22us%22%7D\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">iOS 26<\/a>.
