We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 huxBsk\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/the-who\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Who<\/a> frontman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/roger-daltrey\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Roger Daltrey<\/a> has said that comments made by the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/music\/features\/zak-starkey-the-who-fired-mantra-of-the-cosmos-b2776548.html\">axed drummer Zak Starkey<\/a> after leaving the rock group were \u201cincredibly upsetting\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Starkey, the son of Beatles\u2019 legend Ringo Starr, was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/music\/news\/the-who-zak-starkey-fired-reason-roger-daltrey-b2753572.html\">sensationally sacked from the rock band twice<\/a> in quick succession. The reasons behind the split have been disputed: longtime Who members Daltrey and Pete Townshend have claimed that Starkey made a mistake during <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/music\/news\/the-who-zak-starkey-fired-reason-roger-daltrey-oasis-lineup-b2734169.html\">their Royal Albert Hall performance<\/a> in April, while Starkey has claimed that the error was Daltrey\u2019s. <\/p>\n<p>Later, the band said the drummer had exited the project willingly due to other commitments, but Starkey claimed he<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/music\/news\/the-who-drummer-zak-starkey-retired-b2758701.html\"> had been asked to agree with the statement<\/a>, and did not want to leave the group.<\/p>\n<p>Starkey told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/music\/interviews\/zak-starkey-interview-ringo-starr\/\">The Telegraph <\/a>that poor planning and under-rehearsal had led to an onstage glitch, which meant Daltrey came in too early when performing \u201cThe Song is Over\u201d. \u201cWhat happened was I got it right and Roger got it wrong,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing Starkey\u2019s comments, Daltrey told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/culture\/music\/article\/roger-daltrey-interview-who-tour-dreamland-margate-amerant-bank-arena-florida-kzrv3pgzm\">The Times<\/a>: \u201cIt was kind of a character assassination and it was incredibly upsetting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daltrey stated that the dispute began over the band\u2019s use of electronic drums, which he hears through in-ear monitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is controlled by a guy on the side, and we had so much sub-bass on the sound of the drums that I couldn\u2019t pitch,\u201d he explained. \u201cI was pointing to the bass drum and screaming at [Starkey] because it was like flying a plane without seeing the horizon. So when Zak thought I was having a go at him, I wasn\u2019t. That\u2019s all that happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/MixCollage-02-Aug-2025-10-31-AM-9975.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Daltrey said that Starkey\u2019s comments had been \u2018crippling\u2019\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE\"\/>Daltrey said that Starkey\u2019s comments had been \u2018crippling\u2019 (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>When asked about the back-and-forth between the group, who reinstated Starkey before sacking him again, Daltrey said: \u201cPete and I retain the right to be the Who. Everyone else is a session player. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t replace Keith Moon. We wanted to branch out and that\u2019s all I want to say about it. But [Starkey\u2019s reaction] was crippling to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Independent has contacted Starkey\u2019s representative for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Following the dispute, Starkey was replaced by Scott Devours. <\/p>\n<p>Starkey told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/music\/features\/zak-starkey-the-who-fired-mantra-of-the-cosmos-b2776548.html\">The Independent in June<\/a> that he had been told not to retrieve his drum kit from storage just yet. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what the f*** is happening,\u201d he said. \u201cThe thing is, this is The Who, man. The most unpredictable, aggressive, arrogant people, lovely people who are my family, but you never know what\u2019s gonna happen, and that\u2019s why it\u2019s The Who.
