I might prefer \u201cDedicated Side B,\u201d though.<\/p>\n<p>The Video Game: Dynasty mode, the main event<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">Absolutely, it\u2019s time to lead the newsletter with the video game again. (<strong>Though if you\u2019re not into the video game, there\u2019s other stuff below.<\/strong> And to be fair, it\u2019s June.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">Moments ago, EA Sports released the second <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1e7P_nY2CKw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u201cdeep dive\u201d video<\/a> previewing the upcoming followup to <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6161718\/2025\/02\/27\/ea-sports-college-football-26-video-game-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the record-setting College Football 25<\/a>, this time highlighting new features in Dynasty mode \u2014 aka the team-management mode, aka the mode in which some of us will once again spend 99 percent of our time with this game.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">Meanwhile, Chris Vannini and David Ubben, who\u2019ve spent a good bit of time with the July 10 release, just <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6446454\/2025\/06\/24\/college-football-26-dynasty-mode-ea-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">discussed some of their favorite new Dynasty features<\/a> \u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word; margin-left: 40px;\"><strong>David:<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2019re underrating how much having <strong>real coaches (more than 300 head coaches and coordinators) will add a new element to the game<\/strong> as a whole and, specifically, Dynasty mode. When you create a coach, it often feels like you\u2019re stepping into a fantasy version of college football. Adding player names helped make it more real, and coaches will make it even more so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">\u2026 and their hopes for further improvement:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word; margin-left: 40px;\"><strong>Chris: <\/strong>\u201cThere will finally be protected opponents. You can select one or two in a conference. This was announced for last year but pulled at the last minute. \u2026 I still miss the ability to take control of games not involving your team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\"><strong>I\u2019m most interested in what appears to be improved recruiting<\/strong> (like a busier transfer portal and my team\u2019s position needs appearing right up top, rather than on a separate screen) and the series regaining some historical record-keeping (the return of your own Trophy Room, along with an ever-updating list of national champions from 1869 onward, which some of us are carefully scrutinizing by comparing to the champs crowned in 2017 <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/college-football\/2018\/1\/10\/16873214\/ucf-national-championship-ncaa-colley-rankings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">by the Colley Matrix<\/a> and in 1984 <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/2444823\/2021\/03\/12\/alabama-has-won-18-national-championships-or-has-it-the-complicated-answer-to-a-simple-question\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">by the University of Alabama<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">Also, when I read this sentence by <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/college-football\/news\/ea-sports-college-football-26-dynasty-mode-deep-dive-exploring-the-biggest-changes-and-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Robby Kalland at CBS<\/a>, I literally fist-pumped:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word; margin-left: 40px;\">\u201cPro Potential got a tweak so it doesn\u2019t just evaluate the talent you have on the roster at present, but factors in your draft results for the past four seasons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">No longer will my Colorado State Rams or FIU Panthers be punished for going a year without a draft pick in between first-round Biletnikoff winners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">(A correction: Last week, I described mass substitutions as being \u201cabsent\u201d from last year\u2019s edition. It was absent at launch, when I put in the far majority of my hours, but was patched in a bit later. Still, this year\u2019s game looks like it has better lineup management.)<\/p>\n<p>Quick Snaps<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">\ud83e\uddd1\u200d\ud83c\udf3e \u201cIn some crazy way, I enjoy all the crazy stuff that\u2019s going on the last couple of years here with our game and the landscape and all that. It\u2019s almost like a challenge.\u201d <\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square;\">\n<li style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px;\">Would you believe me if I told you that quote comes from the 69-year-old punt-ologist <strong>Kirk Ferentz<\/strong>? Probably, because there\u2019s a photo of him above it. In an era of nonstop complaining by rich guys (though I guess that\u2019s every era), <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6446598\/2025\/06\/24\/iowa-football-kirk-ferentz-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">this is a refreshing interview by Scott Dochterman<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">\ud83d\ude3a Half a year after <strong>BYU<\/strong> gained a nationally televised commitment from <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5983910\/2024\/12\/10\/aj-dybantsa-byu-basketball-commitment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">No. 1 men\u2019s basketball recruit AJ Dybantsa<\/a>, the Cougars moments ago did it again with five-star Ryder Lyons, <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6447818\/2025\/06\/24\/ryder-lyons-5-star-quarterback-byu-oregon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">who\u2019d been the top uncommitted 2026 QB<\/a>. <\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square;\">\n<li style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">If it sticks, he\u2019ll be <strong>BYU\u2019s highest-rated football freshman since 2003<\/strong>, per 247Sports. (That 2003 lineman, Ofa Mohetau, ended up doing MMA.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">\ud83d\udcd6 The SEC has quite a bit of QB hype this year. One more name to add: <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6432083\/2025\/06\/23\/marcel-reed-texas-am-sec-quarterbacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>Texas A&amp;M<\/strong>\u2018s Marcel Reed, as Ralph Russo explains<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">\ud83d\udcb0 Last week, <strong>Wisconsin sued Miami<\/strong>, <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6440987\/2025\/06\/20\/wisconsin-miami-football-lawsuit-xavier-lucas-transfer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">alleging NIL-related tampering<\/a>. I agree with the story\u2019s top commenter: \u201cThey should allow players to switch schools during halftime.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">\ud83d\udc8e Sunday, LSU won <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6444111\/2025\/06\/22\/lsu-wins-college-world-series-coastal-carolina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">its eighth men\u2019s <strong>College World Series<\/strong> title<\/a>, though the primary excitement was <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6443922\/2025\/06\/22\/coastal-carolina-coach-ejected-college-world-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Coastal Carolina\u2019s manager and first-base coach being ejected almost immediately<\/a> for what seemed like very normal levels of baseball yelling. In a championship elimination game!<\/p>\n<p>Eternal Realignment: Pac-12\u2019s last spot (for now)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">As the Zombie Pac-12 continues to rebuild its media profile (more CBS, along with ESPN and The Almighty CW, <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6445237\/2025\/06\/23\/pac-12-tv-deal-realignment-candidates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">as detailed in a new story by Vannini<\/a>), it also still needs to add one more team in order to count as an NCAA football conference. Having said that, I think the Pac-12 should just stick at seven. What\u2019s the NCAA gonna do about it? Exist?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">Still, let\u2019s say the Pac-12 follows the rules. Currently, Texas State is the clear favorite, with its school president even teasing <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BobcatSicko\/status\/1932555817531621614\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">an image of beavers<\/a> (as in, Oregon State\u2019s mascot) in the Bobcats\u2019 San Marcos River.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">Okay, if that happens, then what? Why, <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6445237\/2025\/06\/23\/pac-12-tv-deal-realignment-candidates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">here\u2019s Vannini yet again<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; margin-left: 40px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">\u201cThe Sun Belt would likely move quickly and replace Texas State with Louisiana Tech, Western Kentucky or Middle Tennessee from Conference USA, according to a person briefed on the Sun Belt\u2019s thinking. CUSA is set to expand this year to 12 schools by adding Delaware and Missouri State from the Football Championship Subdivision. If the league did lose a school and try to backfill, it wouldn\u2019t be able to add another FCS program until 2027 at the earliest because of the FCS-FBS transition process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; word-break: break-word;\">Oh, fun fact: TXST actually wouldn\u2019t be the Pac-12\u2019s easternmost member. Lest we forget the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, an affiliate member for wrestling.
