{"id":113458,"date":"2025-08-02T16:51:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-02T16:51:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/113458\/"},"modified":"2025-08-02T16:51:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-02T16:51:15","slug":"centerpoint-energy-negotiating-to-raise-houston-electric-rates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/113458\/","title":{"rendered":"CenterPoint Energy negotiating to raise Houston electric rates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">CenterPoint Energy is negotiating with Houston and dozens of other cities in its bid to raise customers\u2019 electric rates again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The utility company is seeking to recoup<a href=\"https:\/\/interchange.puc.texas.gov\/Documents\/57579_282_1526155.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/interchange.puc.texas.gov\/Documents\/57579_282_1526155.PDF\"> $1.3 billion in costs<\/a> it says were incurred to restore power after Hurricane Beryl and two other weather events. CenterPoint claims <b>the proposed increase would cost the average household that uses 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity about<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/interchange.puc.texas.gov\/Documents\/58028_2_1495405.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/interchange.puc.texas.gov\/Documents\/58028_2_1495405.PDF\"><b> $2.13 more per month.<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">This request comes on top of a $1 monthly increase the Texas Public Utility Commission approved earlier for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.click2houston.com\/news\/local\/2024\/11\/11\/centerpoint-energy-agrees-to-move-forward-with-rate-review-amid-hike-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.click2houston.com\/news\/local\/2024\/11\/11\/centerpoint-energy-agrees-to-move-forward-with-rate-review-amid-hike-proposal\/\">CenterPoint\u2019s recovery costs <\/a>from the May derecho. They claimed $400 million in expenses from that weather event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">CenterPoint can charge customers \u2018reasonable and necessary\u2019 costs from extreme weather events. But the rates must be approved by the PUC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Representatives from dozens of cities in CenterPoint\u2019s coverage area are pushing back against the cost increase.
