{"id":113524,"date":"2025-08-02T17:26:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-02T17:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/113524\/"},"modified":"2025-08-02T17:26:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-02T17:26:10","slug":"grateful-dead-guitarist-jerry-garcia-has-childhood-street-named-for-him-in-san-francisco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/113524\/","title":{"rendered":"Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia has childhood street named for him in San Francisco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few hundred people gathered Friday to name a tiny San Francisco street after legendary Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia on what would have been his 83rd birthday and as part of a citywide celebration to mark the band\u2019s 60th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>Harrington Street, which is one block long, will also be called \u201cJerry Garcia Street.\u201d He died in 1995, but the band\u2019s popularity has only grown as younger generations\u00a0discover the Dead\u2019s\u00a0improvisational music, which blended rock, blues, folk, and other styles.<\/p>\n<p>Garcia spent part of his childhood in a modest home in the city\u2019s diverse Excelsior neighborhood. <\/p>\n<p>Harrington Street, which is one block long, will also be called \u201cJerry Garcia Street.\u201d AP<\/p>\n<p>He lived with his grandparents after the death of his father, Jose Ramon \u201cJoe\u201d Garcia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that you all get a chance to enjoy the music, dance, hug, smile,\u201d said daughter Trixie Garcia, growing emotional during her brief remarks. \u201cCherish what\u2019s valuable, what\u2019s significant in life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tens of thousands of fans are in San Francisco to commemorate the Grateful Dead\u2019s 60th anniversary with concerts and other activities throughout the city.<\/p>\n<p>The latest iteration of the band,\u00a0Dead &amp; Company, with original Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart, will\u00a0play Golden Gate Park\u2019s Polo Field\u00a0for three days starting Friday. <\/p>\n<p>An estimated 60,000 attendees are expected each day.<\/p>\n<p>Formed in 1965, the Grateful Dead often played for free in their early years while living in a cheap Victorian home in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. <\/p>\n<p>The band later became a significant part of 1967\u2019s\u00a0Summer of Love,\u00a0and the Grateful Dead has become synonymous with San Francisco and its bohemian counterculture.<\/p>\n<p>A few hundred people gathered Friday to name a tiny San Francisco street after legendary Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia on what would have been his 83rd birthday.
