Hollywood is hung up on Madonna<\/a>, but a biopic remains a frozen secret. Regardless, the legendary singer\u2019s life is going to make it to screen eventually \u2014 although whether it gets to the small or big screen first is yet to be determined. This week, \u201cWeapons\u201d star Julia Garner<\/a> \u2014\u00a0who was announced to star in a Madonna movie way back in 2022 \u2014\u00a0confirmed on the podcast \u201cSmartless\u201d<\/a> that, in spite of reports to the contrary, the project \u201cLike a Virgin\u201d is still very much in gestation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s supposed to still happen,\u201d she said (via Variety<\/a>). Garner was set to star alongside Julia Fox<\/a>, who would play Madonna BFF and frequent music video co-star Debi Mazar. Fox spoke with IndieWire<\/a> in 2024 about the movie\u2019s reported shelving by Universal, seeming similarly ambiguous.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know it was gonna be either tour or movie and then she went on tour,\u201d Fox said. \u201cSo I don\u2019t know when the movie will be picking back up again or when they\u2019re going to start working on it again. But I didn\u2019t hear anything. I actually don\u2019t know \u2026 I mean, I\u2019d still love to but I genuinely don\u2019t know. They are going back, you know, when they\u2019re like 19 and they first meet. I feel like I might have already aged out of that casting, but we\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Smartless, Garner said she was enthused to take on Madonna, because she \u201cjust wanted to see if [she] could do it.\u201d The film<\/a> was \u2014\u00a0or is \u2014 to be directed by the \u201cVogue\u201d icon herself, for whom Garner auditioned. \u201cI wasn\u2019t a trained dancer and I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I can dance, basically, and sing\u2026 And sing with her!\u201d Garner related.<\/p>\n

Madonna shared on Instagram<\/a> a year ago that she was still working on the screenplay. \u201cI Need A-lot of Bandz to make this\u2026\u2026\u2026..OKAY,\u201d she wrote, adding, \u201cStory of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

The movie, however, isn\u2019t the only Madonna story in the works. In May, Deadline<\/a> revealed that a Netflix<\/a> series is planned \u2014\u00a0and Garner does have a long history with the streamer, remaining a mainstay with \u201cOzark,\u201d \u201cInventing Anna,\u201d and an upcoming limited series<\/a> about the cryptocurrency exchange FTX. The Madonna TV show would be executive produced by the \u201cA League of Their Own\u201d star, alongside \u201cStranger Things\u201d EP Shawn Levy. <\/p>\n

Whether a series or a film, Madonna\u2019s story would be the latest boomer artist bio in what has become a reliable awards-friendly genre. Just last season, Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet earned an Oscar nod as Bob Dylan in \u201cA Complete Unknown,\u201d while Kingsley Ben-Adir also got stellar notices for his portrayal of Bob Marley. In recent years, Austin Butler was nominated for his role in and as \u201cElvis,\u201d and Rami Malek won the Academy Award for playing Freddie Mercury in \u201cBohemian Rhapsody.\u201d This doesn\u2019t even begin to touch on the boomer artist docs \u2014\u00a0like the Grammy-winning \u201cLinda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice\u201d or the Peter Jackson-directed \u201cThe Beatles: Get Back.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for Madonna, when whatever it becomes will happen remains uncertain. After all, life is a mystery, as she told us in \u201cLike a Prayer.\u201d Whenever a film drops, though, Garner assures it will be worthwhile. \u201cAnything that\u2019s great\u2026 takes a long time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
