From Downton Abbey to the documentaries of filmmaker Ken Burns.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re shows so many Americans love and grew up on, and they were broadcast on local PBS stations thanks to funding from the Corporation of Public Broadcasting.<\/p>\n<p><b>WATCH: Corporation for Public Broadcasting shutdown will impact Tampa&#8217;s PBS and NPR stations<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Corporation for Public Broadcasting shutdown will impact Tampa&#8217;s PBS and NPR stations<\/p>\n<p>But the future of public media is now in question.<\/p>\n<p>Friday, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/cpb.org\/pressroom\/Corporation-Public-Broadcasting-Addresses-Operations-Following-Loss-Federal-Funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced plans to shut down in the coming months<\/a> after a $1.1 billion cut in federal funding.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump and others <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/05\/ending-taxpayer-subsidization-of-biased-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">believe public media is left-leaning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The funding cut and phase-out of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting will have a direct impact in Tampa Bay at both WUSF, Tampa\u2019s NPR radio station, and at WEDU, the area\u2019s PBS station.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Grove, the President and CEO of WEDU, said the funding cut would leave Tampa\u2019s PBS station with a $2.8 million hole.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754164631_654_\" alt=\"downt\"  width=\"1280\" height=\"960\"\/><\/p>\n<p>WFTS<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe gap that we have is a huge gap,\u201d he said. \u201cWEDU has been around for 70 years \u2014\u00a0nearly \u2014\u00a0and we expect to be here for another 70 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grove is optimistic, but the cut will have an impact.<\/p>\n<p>It will need to look for other revenue generators. Local programs it produces might be delayed. WEDU might also have to buy less national programming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s some national programming that will decrease,\u201d Grove said. \u201cWe\u2019ll see some of the seasons of some of the favorite programs possibly shrink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also can\u2019t rule out a reduction in staff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know just yet,\u201d Grove said.<\/p>\n<p>WUSF is facing a roughly $800,000 loss in funding, according to General Manager JoAnn Urofsky.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stations are staying on mission to provide news, public safety information and classical music and arts to the residents of Florida despite cutbacks of $800,000,\u201d Urofsky wrote.<\/p>\n<p>However, the radio station will need donors to help fill the funding gap. Same for WEDU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can\u2019t just be a small bump for a short period of time. It has to be something people believe in long-term,\u201d Grove said.<\/p>\n<p>Only with that support will his station be able to continue its mission \u2014 a mission that Grove says is without a political agenda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t believe PBS and WEDU is left-leaning,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Grove said the only agenda at WEDU is to educate, to document the area\u2019s history and culture, and to inform Tampa Bay during emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>Donate to WEDU\u2019s current fundraising campaign <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pledgecart.org\/home?campaign=C9850F39-8F66-4F21-8AA5-2BEAD810AF7C&amp;_gl=1*3uh927*_gcl_au*Njk0ODQwNTMzLjE3NTQwODQxNTk.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at this link<\/a>.
