After a series of hits in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including &#8220;To Love Somebody,&#8221; &#8220;How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,&#8221; and &#8220;I Started a Joke,&#8221; the band was in a rut. Their latest album, Life in a Tin Can, and single \u201cSaw a New Morning&#8221; sold poorly, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldradiouk.com\/artists\/bee-gees\/beatles-medley-tv-video\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">band\u2019s popularity declined.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On April 6, 1973, the Gibb brothers (Barry, Robin, and Maurice) appeared on The Midnight Special, a late-night TV show that aired on Saturday mornings at 1 a.m. after The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Given the lukewarm reception to their recent releases, the Bee Gees decided to change things up and play a medley of hits from their idols, The Beatles, who had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/inside-the-messy-beatles-breakup-50-years-ago-rp5\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">broken up<\/a> three years before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"594e3\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"1900cfe3df504992c92a5eef89d7b265\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20500%20331'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/img.gif\" width=\"500\" height=\"331\" alt=\"the beatles, bee gees, 1960s\"\/>\u00a0The Beatles were the biggest band on Earth in their heyday.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/the-beatles-1967-magical-mystery-tour-l553EJcE3Mrqo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Giphy<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The performance, which featured five of the Fab Four\u2019s early hits, including \u201cIf I Fell,\u201d \u201cI Need You,\u201d \u201cI&#8217;ll Be Back,\u201d \u201cThis Boy,\u201d and \u201cShe Loves You,\u201d was a stripped-down, acoustic performance that highlighted the Bee Gees&#8217; trademark harmonies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you got brothers singing, it\u2019s like an instrument that no one else can buy. You can\u2019t go buy that sound in a shop. You can\u2019t sing like The Bee Gees because when you got family members singing together, it\u2019s unique,\u201d Noel Gallagher, who sang with his brother Liam in Oasis, said <a href=\"https:\/\/faroutmagazine.co.uk\/the-band-noel-gallagher-thought-no-one-could-sing-like\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to Far Out.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-youtube\">\u00a0\u00a0&#8211; YouTube\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PMhoMrWE18A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">youtu.be<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A year later, the Bee Gees performed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbia.edu\/~brennan\/beegees\/74.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">in small clubs<\/a>, and it looked like their career had hit a dead end. Then, at the urging of their management, the band began to move in a new direction, incorporating soul, rhythm and blues, and a new, underground musical style called disco into their repertoire. Barry also adopted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/how-bee-gees-falsetto-came-to-be\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a falsetto singing style<\/a> popularized by Black singers such as Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye.<\/p>\n<p>This unlikely change for the folksy vocal group catapulted them into the stratosphere and they became the white-satin-clad kings of disco.<\/p>\n<p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"1fc8a\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"7619aae9c719842073949a9f463a13da\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20720%20720'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754174657_474_img.gif\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" alt=\"\"\/>\u00a0john travolta disco GIF by uDiscoverMusic\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/uDiscoverMusic-john-travolta-bee-gees-saturday-night-fever-ADSs70Bsuv8qfw8FyE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Giphy<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the late \u201870s, the band had massive hits, including songs featured on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/static\/programs\/national-recording-preservation-board\/documents\/SatNightFever.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">40-million-selling <\/a>Saturday Night Fever soundtrack: \u201cStayin\u2019 Alive,\u201d How Deep is Your Love,\u201d More Than a Woman,\u201d Jive Talkin\u2019,\u201d and \u201cNight Fever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1978, the band made a <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/sgt-peppers-lonely-hearts-club-band-movie\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">significant misstep<\/a>, starring in a musical based on The Beatles&#8217; music called Sgt. Pepper\u2019s Lonely Hearts Club Band, produced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/19-years-after-writing-grease-the-bee-gees-performed-it-for-the-first-time-ex1\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Stigwood<\/a>, the man behind Saturday Night Fever and Grease. The film was a colossal bomb, although the soundtrack sold well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-youtube\">\u00a0\u00a0&#8211; YouTube\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=F__uGshlbOo&amp;list=RDF__uGshlbOo&amp;start_radio=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.youtube.com<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Beatles&#8217; George Harrison thought the Bee Gees film was about what happens when you become successful and greedy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just feel sorry for Robert Stigwood, the Bee Gees, and Pete Frampton for doing it because they had established themselves in their own right as decent artists,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldradiouk.com\/artists\/the-beatles\/george-harrison-bee-gees-greedy\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Harrison said.<\/a> &#8220;And suddenly\u2026 it&#8217;s like the classic thing of greed. The more you make the more you want to make, until you become so greedy that ultimately you put a foot wrong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Even though the Bee Gees\u2019 Beatle-themed musical was a flop, former Beatle John Lennon remained a fan of the group. They do a damn good job. There was nothing else going on then.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Bee Gees historic career ended when Maurice passed away in 2003 at 53. Robin would follow in 2009 at 62.
