{"id":114142,"date":"2025-08-02T23:06:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-02T23:06:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/114142\/"},"modified":"2025-08-02T23:06:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-02T23:06:10","slug":"curebound-cancer-challenge-raises-3-million-for-local-research-to-find-a-cure-nbc-7-san-diego","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/114142\/","title":{"rendered":"Curebound Cancer Challenge raises $3 million for local research to find a cure \u2013 NBC 7 San Diego"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hundreds of cyclists kicked off the 2025 <a href=\"http:\/\/curebound.org\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"http:\/\/curebound.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Curebound Cancer Challenge<\/a> Saturday morning on the campus of UC San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>The annual cancer research fundraiser was formally known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curebound.org\/padrespedal\/resources\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.curebound.org\/padrespedal\/resources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Padres Pedal the Cause<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Fred Perez was one of the more than 2,800 people registered for this year&#8217;s event. He rode in the 55-mile bike race.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My dad had cancer. My sister-in-law had cancer. She\u2019s recovered from it, but every day we\u2019re hearing about a family member that\u2019s been devastated by this disease,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers decided to expand branding of the event with a name change and more activities for participants to complete while raising donations. She is now the producer of the fundraiser that included walking, running, cycling, and spinning for dollars to defeat the disease.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cIt\u2019s really a community effort and we know that\u2019s what it\u2019s going to take,&#8221; Ambrose told NBC 7. &#8220;It is really every single person committing themselves to a future without cancer.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p> It\u2019s really a community effort and we know that\u2019s what it\u2019s going to take.<br \/>&#8220;It is really every single person committing themselves to a future without cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Megan Ambrose, Producer 2025 Curebound Cancer Challenge<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The White House has proposed cutting the budget of the U.S. National Institutes of Health by almost 40% in the coming fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p>That could reduce significant medical research according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama-health-forum\/fullarticle\/2836433\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama-health-forum\/fullarticle\/2836433\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Journal of the American Medical Association<\/a> (JAMA). <\/p>\n<p>Karina Moreno participated in the fixed cycle spinning activity and then the 5K walk and run, Saturday. Her mother, Tere Chavez, died in September 2021 of stage 4 lung cancer. \u201cWhen she was diagnosed, they told us it\u2019s going to be six months. She stayed with us three years.
