Los Angeles Times via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is language that, anywhere outside this building where there aren\u2019t four armed guards, would get you hurt if you said these things in public,\u201d Harris-Dawson told the Los Angeles Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-03-22\/los-angeles-city-council-cracks-down-on-hateful-language\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earlier this year. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>He added that public comment has become \u201crank, cantankerous, and rude and demeaning and insulting\u201d since Donald Trump\u2019s election in 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/news\/politics\/los-angeles-city-council-bans-use-of-n-word-c-word-in-meetings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the LAist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Wednesday ban is already drawing legal threats.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne Spindler, an attorney and longtime City Hall commenter, said Wednesday he intends to sue.<\/p>\n<p>Critics of the new rule, including frequent City Hall speakers, claimed the city was infringing on free speech and promised legal challenges. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to file my $400-million lawsuit that I already have prepared and ready to file,\u201d Spindler said during public comment, adding he plans to read explicit Tupac Shakur lyrics until he\u2019s banned from a meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Spindler <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/post\/man-arrested-for-criminal-threats-hate-speech-at-la-city-council-meeting\/1345395\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was arrested in 2016<\/a> after submitting a public comment card showing a burning cross, a man hanging from a tree and the phrase \u201cHerb = [N-word],\u201d referring to then-Council President Herb Wesson. Prosecutors declined to bring charges.<\/p>\n<p>David Loy, legal director of the First Amendment Coalition, warned the council\u2019s policy likely won\u2019t survive in court.<\/p>\n<p>Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson said offensive speech has surged since 2016, creating a chilling effect on civic engagement. Los Angeles Times via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe First Amendment prohibits the government from censoring speech because it disapproves of that speech,\u201d Loy wrote in a letter to the City Council. <\/p>\n<p>The city has lost similar battles before. In 2014, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/cityhall\/la-me-kkk-hood-settlement-20140613-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paid $215,000 to a black man<\/a> who was removed from a meeting for wearing a Ku Klux Klan hood and a T-shirt with the N-word.<\/p>\n<p>The new rule took effect immediately.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Watch your mouth!
