The Dallas Animal Services said it is immediately limiting the number of dogs it can take in due to reported cases of canine distemper. <\/p>\n
The service says its shelter will only accept dogs that are critically sick or injured or who are a danger to themselves or others. Shelter dogs that were already exposed are currently being quarantined, while testing is happening to understand the impact, according to Saturday news release. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe are working with subject matter experts on the best way to address this issue,\u201d the DAS said.<\/p>\n
The American Veterinary Medical Association<\/a> says dogs with distemper can develop symptoms such as discharge-filled eyes and noses, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and convulsions. The virus can spread through the air \u2014 such as through sneezing, coughing and barking \u2014 or through shared items such as water bowls. <\/p>\n Breaking News<\/p>\n In order to limit intake, the service urges struggling pet owners to access the Owner Surrender Resources<\/a>.
