OXNARD, Calif. — Micah Parsons<\/a> is the first Cowboys player in recent memory to ever make a public trade request.<\/a> Things said in private during negotiations? That\u2019s a different story, according to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.<\/a> <\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s negotiation,\u201d Jones said after Saturday\u2019s practice and after chants in support of Parsons were heard loudly.<\/a> \u201cI\u2019ve heard that so many times in my 30 years in the NFL from not just players, but agents, of course. We all understand contracts. We\u2019re under contract. That\u2019s what we\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Jones will not do is oblige Parsons\u2019 request. Jones, when asked multiple times on Saturday, said he hasn\u2019t and will not consider trading Parsons. <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t really place that with any real seriousness,\u201d Jones said. \u201cMicah\u2019s got a bad back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parsons has been in Oxnard, California with the team, but he hasn\u2019t practiced. He spoke publicly once since he\u2019s been here<\/a> and said that he wouldn\u2019t practice until his tweaked back had healed. <\/p>\n

Parsons wrote a lengthy post on Friday<\/a>, citing a timeline of the negotiation and multiple reasons why he wanted to leave the Cowboys. The big sticking point has been the lack of conversations between Jerry and Stephen Jones and Parsons\u2019 agent, David Mulugheta of Athletes First.<\/a> <\/p>\n

\u201cI no longer want to be held to close door negotiations without my agent present. I no longer want shots taken at me for getting injured while laying it on the line for the organization, our fans and my teammates. I no longer want narratives created and spread to the media about me. I had purposely stayed quiet in hopes of getting something done. But since there is confusion out there let me clear some things up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parsons and Jones met in March. Jones has said previously that he and Parsons went over \u201cevery detail\u201d of a contract. He believed an agreement was had. Parsons, however, would not do a deal without his agent\u2019s approval. <\/p>\n

When asked when he would start negotiating with Mulugheta, Jones cited that conversation. <\/p>\n

\u201cI started negotiations in March. I\u2019ve negotiated double handfuls of contracts just like I did in March,\u201d Jones said. <\/p>\n

Jones was later asked if the contract Jones offered in March is still on the table.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cMicah took it off,\u201d Jones said. \u201cHe took it off.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones later continued: \u201cThe key is that we\u2019ve got an agreement. Let\u2019s really do understand that: we\u2019ve got an agreement. Now, if we\u2019re going to adjust that agreement, then he\u2019s a must and I\u2019m a must — not the organization. I\u2019m a must in this case.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very important that if you\u2019re going to change the contract that we have right now, which this would, then that I agree to what we\u2019ve changed. That\u2019s why it was so good when we sat down together and spent a lot of time going back and forth and adjusting and we had that exercise together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones said that there weren\u2019t negotiations with Parsons last season. Parsons said in his letter that he wanted to start those a season ago, but the Cowboys weren\u2019t willing. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt could very well be,\u201d Jones said when asked if Parsons told him he wanted to negotiate. \u201cIf it\u2019s what he wants, that could cover a lot of ground.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones also expressed that his history would suggest that the Cowboys and players come to deals despite tough negotiations. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt seems like we forget less than a year I paid the highest that\u2019s been paid in the NFL to Dak [Prescott],<\/a> and I paid a big price for [CeeDee] Lamb.<\/a> Anybody that says I\u2019m not interested in financially rewarding my players hasn\u2019t been looking at the tea leaves. There\u2019s always, always negotiation, and the negotiation is to put the best team on the field.\u201d<\/p>\n

In terms of putting Parsons on some other team\u2019s field, Jones said he won\u2019t do it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI enjoy these players. I enjoy Micah, but as always, in any relationship, there are different moods at different times of your relationship. That\u2019s what it is. Don\u2019t lose any sleep over it. That\u2019s one thing I would say to our fans: don\u2019t lose any sleep over it.\u201d<\/p>\n
