Only Mississippi ranked lower.

Nationwide, the proportion of people without health insurance has fallen over the past decade. The Commonwealth Fund attributed that change to “the Affordable Care Act’s coverage expansions, recent state expansions of Medicaid eligibility, and more affordable marketplace plan premiums.”

Business Briefing

Become a business insider with the latest news.

From 2013 to 2023, Texas’ uninsured rate dipped, too. In 2013, nearly 30% of Texans were uninsured, compared to 21.6% in 2023.

But the 2023 rate remained high compared to other states. The state with the next-highest uninsured rate, Oklahoma, was at 16.3% in 2023.

Texas is also among the 10 states that have not expanded Medicaid access under the Affordable Care Act. Medicaid is a joint federal-state program that provides health care coverage to people who have low incomes or meet other program requirements.

Some Texas lawmakers have pushed for the state to expand Medicaid, but the efforts have gained little momentum. That effort again made little headway during this year’s legislative session.

While the state’s uninsured ranking isn’t new, the impact on Texans can be profound.

Research shows that people in the U.S. who do not have health insurance are more likely to delay or skip medical care and more likely to die from health issues.

Texas didn’t rank at the bottom of all of the metrics in the report.

The state was middle of the pack for infant mortality and rates of preventable premature deaths. The state also ranked 27th for the composite category “healthy lives,” which included premature preventable deaths, suicide, smoking, obesity and other factors.

Texas still has the highest uninsured rate of any state in the country, beating out the next-highest state…

[35
210,1141,1142,881,358,67,132,68
0":"post-11506","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-health-care","8":"tag-health","9":"tag-health-care","10":"tag-healthcare","11":"tag-public-health","12":"tag-texas","13":"tag-united-states","14":"tag-unitedstates","15":"tag-us
["GET
