Christie Brinkley didn\u2019t direct HBO\u2019s new documentary<\/a> on her ex, Billy Joel, but the supermodel certainly shot a lot of footage for the project.<\/p>\n

Brinkley\u2019s daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, 39, watched the new doc <\/a>on her dad, \u201cAnd So It Goes,\u201d with Brinkley \u2014 and tells Page Six that her mom\u2019s obsession with documenting their family life helped provide some magical moments in the two-part film.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was really incredible to see, I cried I laughed. My mom cried,\u201d she told us of seeing the film together. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou know I watched it with my mother and it was quite a trip down memory lane \u2014 and shout out to my mom too because she provided so much of the archival footage that you see\u2026 [the] footage of my parents when they were together, and all the magic.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cPiano Man\u201d legend and the Sports Illustrated swimsuit icon were married from 1985 to 1994. The film covers their whirlwind romance, which inspired Joel\u2019s 1983 hit, \u201cUptown Girl.\u201d Alexa was born in 1985, and Joel wrote the song, \u201cLullabye\u00a0(Goodnight, My Angel),\u201d about her. <\/p>\n

Alexa sat for four hours of interviews for the doc, and also appears in photos and video footage as a child.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was young\u2026 she documented everything,\u201d Alexa says of Brinkley. \u201cShe does it on her phone now, but back in the back in \u201980s they had a video camera\u2026 so you know she had that on her shoulder [and] she didn\u2019t miss a beat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alexa adds: \u201cIt turned out to be a good use for this documentary, and you wouldn\u2019t have all of those beautiful moments that you see. [Those] beautiful archives were provided by my mother\u2026 you see the magic. It\u2019s not just the fact that she documented it\u2026 she documented it so well, she never misses a moment. She\u2019s got to get everything captured. She\u2019s got that always.\u201d<\/p>\n

For her own interviews in the doc, Alexa says, \u201cI\u2019ve been blessed to have a good memory, like both of my parents\u2026 I\u2019m like a steel vault, like my parents. I don\u2019t forget things.\u201d <\/p>\n

For example, she recalls her dad heading to Shelter Island to record his 1993 album, \u201cRiver of Dreams,\u201d and, \u201cI remember my mom working tirelessly at the Further Lane house on the \u2018River of Dreams\u2019 album cover,\u201d which Brinkley painted.<\/p>\n

The film follows Joel\u2019s iconic career and personal life. Legacy Recordings<\/p>\n

The film also details Joel\u2019s family history of depression<\/a>, and Alexa says the film helps destigmatize mental health struggles. <\/p>\n

She told People Magazine<\/a>: \u201cDepression runs in my family. I\u2019ve\u00a0seen my father struggle\u00a0with it. I\u2019ve seen my grandmother struggle, and personally, I\u2019ve experienced it as well,\u201d adding that she\u2019s \u201cdoing better these days and exercise really helps.\u201d<\/p>\n

She\u2019ll serve as will serve as the\u00a0celebrity grand marshal for the Hope for Depression Research Foundation\u2019s 10th annual Race of Hope to Defeat Depression in Southampton Village on Aug. 3.
