(Photo provided by N&R Design)

WILLIAMSBURG — N&R Design, a full-service interior design and renovation company founded by longtime collaborators Roxanne McKinley and Nicole Tomaszewski, has launched in Williamsburg.

McKinley is originally from Florida and has been in the Williamsburg area for three years. She has a background in management and has been in the interior design industry for about three years.

About a year ago, Tomaszewski returned to the area after 20 years in New York to be closer to her son, who is in the Navy. She was a kitchen and bath designer for 12 years in New York and planned to do the same when she came down to Virginia.

Tomaszewski and McKinley met while working together at another company.

“When we were working at the company together, and we actually, for the first time, collaborated on a project, there was this immediate synergy between us,” Tomaszewski described. “That creative energy was undeniable, with Roxanne’s interior design knowledge and know-how, and then I’ve got the background in kitchen and bath. Together, we realized that it was something powerful that just worked together. It just felt really natural. That’s why we decided to build a business around that.”

N&R Design values sustainable design — something important to both founders. The duo added it is important to them to listen to their clients and learn about their day-to-day lives so they can create a functional design before anything else. This way, they say they can incorporate things the client already owns into the design.

“It’s not just about making it beautiful, but it’s about making it work for them and telling their specific story,” McKinley said.

The business offers what it calls the Black Velvet Door — a design service to help create adult-centered spaces, such as home speakeasy or a cigar lounge, in the home. According to the company’s website, “whether envisioned as a private lounge, a moody retreat, or a bold statement space, the Black Velvet Door showcases the transformative power of interior design when curated with passion, precision, and a fearless eye for drama.”

N&R Design says it can also work on commercial spaces. Military and First Responder discounts are also available.
