\n\tAdam Lambert<\/a> is championing Cynthia Erivo<\/a> in Jesus Christ Superstar<\/a><\/a>, despite backlash surrounding her casting<\/a> as the titular role.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice\u2019s musical, the Tony Award winner<\/a> portrayed Jesus alongside the American Idol<\/a> alum as Judas at the Hollywood Bowl<\/a> for the first three nights of August.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen news of Erivo\u2019s casting was announced, it was criticized because she is a Black queer woman. However, Lambert doesn\u2019t share the same concerns, and admitted in an interview with Billboard<\/a> that he was \u201cexcited by the challenge\u201d of the Oscar nominee<\/a> leading Jesus Christ Superstar.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cCynthia\u2019s brilliant. Her voice, presence, and simultaneous power and vulnerability absolutely blows my mind and working with her has been a dream,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m excited by the challenge of presenting the audience with a production led by a female, Black \u2018Jesus\u2019 and encourage the audience to expand their minds a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLambert added, \u201cOriginally utilizing rock and roll, Jesus Christ Superstar is supposed to provoke and challenge, that\u2019s the point. And shouldn\u2019t the teachings of Jesus transcend gender?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Wicked<\/a> star previously responded to the backlash of her being cast as Jesus in the musical in a June interview with Billboard<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou can\u2019t please everyone,\u201d Erivo said. \u201cIt is legitimately a three-day performance at the Hollywood Bowl where I get to sing my face off. So hopefully they will come and realize, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s a musical, the gayest place on Earth.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tJesus Christ Superstar kicked off its consecutive three-day run at the Hollywood Bowl on Friday night. Erivo will next been seen on the silver screen in the highly anticipated Wicked: For Good<\/a>, the followup to Jon M.
