We&#8217;ll<br \/>\ncontinue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way,&#8221; the statement read. &#8220;Great jeans look good on everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Reaction to the campaign included<br \/>\nsome observing that it appeared to promote eugenics. Others, including conservative-leaning news sites, a White House spokesperson and Vice President J.D. Vance said those reaction were<br \/>\n\u201cwoke\u201d and overblown.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Many commentators had opinions about the original ad, and the backlash.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe\u00a0jeans\/genes\u00a0play is a garden-variety dad pun,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2025\/07\/sydney-sweeney-american-eagle-ads\/683704\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">notes The Atlantic<\/a>. \u201cBut when uttered by Sweeney\u2014a blond, blue-eyed<br \/>\nactor whose buxomness and comfort in her own skin seems to drive everyone just a little bit insane\u2014it becomes something else. Sweeney does not speak much about her politics (for interested<br \/>\nparties, there are potential clues, such as a 2020\u00a0tweet\u00a0supporting Black Lives Matter and a\u00a0mention\u00a0of having conservative relatives), but this hasn\u2019t stopped the right wing<br \/>\nfrom framing her as one of their own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Even the controversial Brooke Shields\u2019 Calvin Klein jeans as from 1980 was never somehow construed as political.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe great ongoing American conversation escalated into a great American bar fight this summer, as a long and increasingly unhinged national back-and-forth about race, politics,<br \/>\nsexuality, the nature of both the Trump administration and fame itself was triggered by \u2026 a jeans ad,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/02\/entertainment\/sydney-sweeney-american-eagle-ad-dunkin-drama-cec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to CNN Entetainment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Bottom line, and hopefully this really will<br \/>\nblow over now, American Eagle got its 15 minutes of fame and then some.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThis is the modern formula for outrage marketing,\u201d said Molly McPherson, crisis and<br \/>\nreputation strategist, according to CNN Entertainment. \u201cYou spark debate, you drive engagement, you ride the wave.
