In terms of horror, the genre has thrived on TV and in theaters, as new IPs are rising to prominence. The Walking Dead, Stranger Things, and The Last of Us are the most obvious examples, but there has also been Evil, Preacher, Wednesday, and more.

Yet, for all that horror shows have been thriving, they have also been suffering early endings. Many shows are being canceled too soon, and Evil, Warrior Nun, and Lovecraft Country are just some of their number. Other series are also ending soon, including Stranger Things and the gory show, The Boys.

Some of these canceled shows saw an appropriate conclusion. Evil had enough advanced warning that allowed the creators to wrap up most storylines, and Warrior Nun viewers launched a public campaign that led to a revival. One horror show, however, has been waiting for a renewal for 10 years, and it is now coming to a new streaming platform.

Hannibal Is Found A New Streaming Home

Released in 2013, Hannibal was based on Thomas Harris’ horror novels and featured Mads Mikkelsen as the psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter. He worked with Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), an investigator who worked alongside the police in an attempt to catch serial killers, and Laurence Fishburne also starred as FBI boss Jack Crawford.

The series ran for just three seasons and concluded on August 29, 2015, after NBC canceled the show due to low viewership numbers. The wider Hannibal cast has never stopped advocating for a revival, but the show simply never managed to earn that coveted renewal, due to contractual and scheduling issues.

While Hannibal season 4 has still never been confirmed, the show is about to find a new streaming home. Hannibal is heading to Prime Video on August 30. The show was previously available on Hulu, though it left the service last year. Now, it will be accessible to anyone with a Prime Video subscription.

                        What This Means For Hannibal

While it does not guarantee that the show will draw enough viewership to earn a renewal, a high concentration of viewers on Prime Video could compel Amazon to reconsider a renewal order. As the bloody Dexter: Resurrections launches into success for Paramount+, Prime Video could consider replacing The Boys with another gore-heavy show.

Calls for Hannibal season 4 still persist even a decade after the show ended, and the cast has never actually lost faith in the follow-up. Mikkelsen continues to emphasize that “there’s always new hope” and that “it’s got to happen eventually”. If viewers swarm Prime Video on August 30, there is still a chance that Hannibal will come back to life.

Source: Prime Video

The 21st century has been the perfect period for both horror shows and revivals.
