Following the initial rollout<\/a> for some beta users last week, Google shared more details<\/a> about the Phone app\u2019s upcoming Material 3 Expressive redesign, including a big revamp of bottom bar navigation.<\/p>\n In addition to the \u201cvisual style updates,\u201d Google is reorganizing app navigation and the bottom bar. Voicemail is the only holdover at the end, with the dedicated Favorites tab gone and replaced by a \u201cFavorites bar\u201d in the new \u201cHome\u201d tab, previously called Recents. Meanwhile, the Contacts tab\/list has been removed.\u00a0<\/p>\n Instead, you have a new \u201cKeypad\u201d tab at the center that replaces the FAB (floating action button). As such, the app is down to three tabs in the bottom bar.<\/p>\n Google also touts a simplified or \u201cflattened\u201d call log so that \u201ccalls from the same person aren\u2019t nested under a single entry.\u201d The goal is to \u201cmake it easier to quickly understand your call history as a single chronological list, as opposed to navigating into each contact to view prior missed or answered calls.\u201d<\/p>\n \tAdvertisement – scroll for more content<\/p>\n Finally, Google says the redesigned incoming call UI with its \u201chorizontal swipe-to-answer\/decline gesture\u201d is \u201cpreferred [based on user feedback] for avoiding accidental declines and answers while taking the phone out of one\u2019s pocket.\u201d<\/p>\n The goal of these three functional updates is to make the \u201cend-to-end app experience easier to navigate and use.\u201d<\/p>\n This bottom bar redesign and other Phone by Google updates are gradually rolling out to the public beta group<\/a> over the coming weeks.
