{"id":116922,"date":"2025-08-04T00:51:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T00:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/116922\/"},"modified":"2025-08-04T00:51:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T00:51:10","slug":"yankees-staring-down-real-gut-check-time-after-getting-swept-by-marlins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/116922\/","title":{"rendered":"Yankees staring down &#8216;real gut-check time&#8217; after getting swept by Marlins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MIAMI \u2014 The Yankees arrived here Thursday night having won four of their past five games and with some extra juice <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/02\/sports\/volatility-at-center-of-yankees-overhaul-leads-post-deadline-observations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from a strong trade deadline<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the weekend, though, they had essentially tripped and spilled the juice all over themselves.<\/p>\n<p>A miserable series came to a fitting end Sunday when Luis Gil sputtered in his season debut, putting the Yankees in a hole they could not climb out of in a 7-3 loss as the Marlins swept them out of loanDepot Park.<\/p>\n<p>The damaging weekend \u2014 the first time in franchise history the Yankees were swept by the Marlins \u2014 began with a brutal 13-12 loss Friday night, when their trade deadline reinforcements failed them. <\/p>\n<p>Luis Gil reacts during the Yankees\u2019 loss to the Marlins on Aug. 3. AP<\/p>\n<p>Jazz Chisholm Jr.\u2019s baserunning blunder loomed over Saturday\u2019s 2-0 loss. <\/p>\n<p>And then the offense was quiet again Sunday as the excitement over Gil\u2019s return quickly fizzled.<\/p>\n<p>The end result was the Yankees (60-52) falling further into third place in the AL East, 1 \u00b9\/\u2082 games behind the Red Sox and 4 \u00b9\/\u2082 behind the Blue Jays.<\/p>\n<p>Luis Gil throws a pitch during the Yankees\u2019 Aug. 3 loss. Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s getting to be real gut check time,\u201d manager Aaron Boone said. \u201cIt\u2019s getting late. It\u2019s certainly not too late for us. I am confident that we\u2019re going to get it together, but that\u2019s all it is right now. It\u2019s empty until we start doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Yankees on Sunday night flew to Texas, where they hope to get Aaron Judge back from the injured list Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>But they will need more than the likely AL MVP alone to right the ship, as their struggles have lasted nearly two months, long before Judge got hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Since holding a season-high seven-game lead atop the AL East on May 28, the Yankees have gone 25-32, a stretch that accounts for over a third of their season. <\/p>\n<p>They were still a season-high 17 games above .500 on June 12 before going 18-27 through Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>There have been a few times along the way it seemed like they were about to break out of their malaise, only to drop right back into it and kill any progress they had made.<\/p>\n<p>Jakob Marsee reacts after hitting a triple during the Marlins\u2019 Aug. 3 win over the Yankees. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think everyone in this room, we have really high expectations and we\u2019re not meeting them right now,\u201d Cody Bellinger said. \u201cIt\u2019s frustrating. We had a great last series at home and come in here, Miami just swept us. Got to look ourselves in the mirror, go to Texas and play baseball the way I know we can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before and after Sunday\u2019s game, Boone made multiple references to it starting with him, needing to get the best out of his players. <\/p>\n<p>But that has not happened nearly consistently enough.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony Volpe strikes out during the Yankees\u2019 Aug. 3 loss. That starts with me in helping them get it out. But we got to do it. I am very confident that we will, but it has been a long enough stretch of ups and downs, lose a few, win a few.
