{"id":116926,"date":"2025-08-04T00:53:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T00:53:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/116926\/"},"modified":"2025-08-04T00:53:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T00:53:15","slug":"us-confirms-palestinian-killed-in-alleged-settler-attack-was-american-citizen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/116926\/","title":{"rendered":"US confirms Palestinian killed in alleged settler attack was American citizen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The US State Department on Sunday confirmed an American citizen had died this week in the West Bank, with family and Palestinian officials attributing his death to arson by Israeli settlers.<\/p>\n<p>The Palestinian Authority and witnesses reported on Thursday that settlers had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/palestinian-man-reported-killed-during-fiery-overnight-settler-rampage-near-ramallah\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">set fire<\/a> to homes and cars in the village of Silwad in the central West Bank, the latest in a string of attacks in the Palestinian territory.<\/p>\n<p>Khamis Ayyad, 41, died from smoke inhalation due to the fires, the Palestinian Authority health ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking Friday at a press conference in Chicago, Ayyad\u2019s family said he had moved to the West Bank several years ago with his wife and children, but continued to work for an American company.<\/p>\n<p>He is at least the second American citizen killed in West Bank settler violence in July, after 20-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/his-son-slain-by-settlers-a-palestinian-american-looks-to-washington-to-end-violence\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saif Musallet<\/a> was beaten to death while visiting family in the town of Sinjil.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel, demanded Israel investigate that killing, calling it a \u201ccriminal and terrorist act,\u201d but has yet to comment on the death of Ayyad.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3610678\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/AFP__20250731__68E63NE__v2__HighRes__TopshotPalestinianIsraelConflict-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/p>\n<p>People inspect damage after an alleged attack by settlers in the West Bank town of Silwad on July 31, 2025. (Zain JAAFAR \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>The IDF said it received reports of the arson attack and dispatched troops to the scene; however, all the suspects had fled by the time the forces arrived.<\/p>\n<p>According to the IDF, Palestinians hurled stones at the troops as they were scanning the area. The soldiers also located a burnt-out car and graffiti left behind by the Israeli assailants.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli authorities have requested that the Palestinian Authority provide the results of Ayyad\u2019s autopsy, according to a military official. (AP Photo\/Majdi Mohammed)<\/p>\n<p>Separately, residents of the West Bank village of Aqraba on Sunday buried a 24-year-old Palestinian who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/palestinian-reportedly-killed-seven-others-wounded-in-settler-attack-near-nablus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killed<\/a> by Israeli settlers the day before, the mayor told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>The man was killed during a violent confrontation involving firearms that lasted half an hour and left eight other people injured, Mayor Salah Jaber said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt happened very close to the homes of residents. That\u2019s why they (came out) to defend their area, their homes and their farms,\u201d Jaber said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe shooting was clearly intended to kill. (Zain JAAFAR \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Violence in the West Bank has spiked since the Hamas onslaught of October 7, 2023, which sparked the war in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Settler attacks on Palestinians throughout the West Bank have been taking place on a near-daily basis, largely with impunity, in what has sparked mounting sanctions from Western governments.<\/p>\n<p>Since October 7, Israeli troops and settlers have killed at least 950 Palestinians, including many militants, according to PA health ministry figures. The IDF says the vast majority of them were gunmen killed in exchanges of fire, rioters who clashed with troops or terrorists carrying out attacks.<\/p>\n<p>During the same period, 53 people, including Israeli security personnel, have been killed in terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank.
