Abbott threatens removal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>CHICAGO<\/strong> \u2013 Texas Democrats said the state legislature is holding flood victims \u201chostage\u201d by focusing on approving new congressional maps, instead of working to provide aid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s been two weeks,\u201d said Gene Wu, chair of the House Democratic Caucus, \u201cthey don\u2019t even have a bill filed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Democratic state lawmakers left Austin on Sunday to prevent a vote on new congressional maps designed to give Republicans additional seats in the U.S. House during the upcoming midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThey have spent their entire time playing dirty, political games that only help themselves,\u201d Wu said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Democratic lawmakers spread out to Illinois, Massachusetts, New York and other regions of the country, and plan to meet with leaders in those states over the coming days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThey are not in Austin,\u201d said state Rep. Chris Turner, D-Arlington, \u201cand they are not going back to the Capitol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Democratic State Reps. Diego Bernal, Trey Martinez Fischer and Ray Lopez, who all represent San Antonio, are among the legislators in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In a news conference held Sunday in conjunction with Illinois Gov. J.D. Pritzker, Democrats accused Republicans of \u201cgerrymandering\u201d to silence minority voices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe will not be complicit in the destruction of our own communities,\u201d Wu said. \u201cWe will not be complicit in the destruction of any communities in Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">On a bus ride to the news conference, state Rep. Diego Bernal, D-San Antonio, told KSAT that Republican lawmakers used race as a way to redraw the districts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThey\u2019re taking neighborhoods and counties and splitting them in half,\u201d Bernal said, \u201cand then drawing them together with other counties and towns hundreds of miles away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In the days leading up to breaking quorum, prominent Republicans such as Attorney General Ken Paxton have said Democrats who leave the state should be \u201carrested\u201d and brought back to the Capitol.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Democrats in the Texas House who try and run away like cowards should be found, arrested, and brought back to the Capitol immediately.<\/p>\n<p>We should use every tool at our disposal to hunt down those who think they are above the law.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Attorney General Ken Paxton (@KenPaxtonTX) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KenPaxtonTX\/status\/1952114350153490634?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">August 3, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Turner said lawmakers are abiding by state law to defend Texans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe are using the power that we have as state legislators under the Texas Constitution to fight for our constituents,\u201d Turner said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Gov. Greg Abbott threatened to remove lawmakers who do not return before 3 p.m. Monday and charge them with felonies, in a statement released minutes after the news conference ended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Texas House rules <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/01\/11\/texas-house-rules-democratic-chairs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adopted by<\/a> Republicans in 2023 impose a threat of arrest and a $500-per-day fine on each lawmaker who absconds from the state.
