Ok \u2013 it\u2019s time to complain about Training Camp\u200a\u2014\u200aonce again. It\u2019s not the fault of the Philadelphia Eagles\u200a\u2014\u200ait\u2019s the modern<\/a> NFL and the modern society that we live in. Today\u2019s paramount concern<\/a> is more about safety than it is about the fan experience itself\u200a\u2014\u200awhile still allowing fans to see top draft picks, free agents<\/a>, and UDFA\u2019s alike.<\/p>\n The opportunity to see your favorite team in the early days of August isn\u2019t a national secret. It\u2019s not a moon landing. Watching the very beginnings of a new NFL season shouldn\u2019t be shrouded in mystery\u200a\u2014\u200aleast of all from the fans that it depends upon. It\u2019s part of giving back to the fans.\u00a0<\/p>\n Ninety years ago\u200a\u2014\u200athe Eagles moved Training Camp from a two-year stay in Atlantic City back to Philadelphia. Those who saw the team practice at Chestnut Hill Academy back in August<\/a> of 1935 (my grandpop among them) had a vastly difference experience than the one offered by the NFL today. Onlookers could walk onto the sideline, each lunch not far from the field, and even interact with players. For many fans\u200a\u2014\u200ait was<\/a> the only opportunity to see the Eagles as most games were only on radio<\/a> during the season.<\/p>\n Sixty years later when I attended my first camp\u200a\u2014\u200athe experience was still overwhelming for a sixteen year old boy\u200a\u2014\u200abut still greatly diminished. Barriers and taped walkways kept you a distance away from the field (but still ended you back up at the gift tent) with a limited walkaround of the field separated by position group<\/a> (offense, defense, special teams.)<\/p>\n Now the Eagles relegate the fan experience to one public practice in the August heat. They sit in the bleachers<\/a> rather than being right up close to the players<\/a>. It\u2019s not the experience that Grandpop had back in 1935\u200a\u2014\u200abut it is however still an experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n One with the world champions.
