(Suzanne Vlamis\/AP)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1984:<\/strong> Blond-haired Morton Grove native Bart Conner produced a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/image\/202296493\/?terms=%22bart%20conner%22%20gymnastics%20gold%20medal&amp;match=6\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/image\/202296493\/?terms=%22bart%20conner%22%20gymnastics%20gold%20medal&amp;match=6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flawless performance<\/a>\u00a0in the parallel bars to earn his first gold medal, which was quite a feat considering he had surgery the previous December to repair a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/image\/202383144\/?match=1&amp;terms=%22bart%20conner%22%20gymnastics%20gold%20medal\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/image\/202383144\/?match=1&amp;terms=%22bart%20conner%22%20gymnastics%20gold%20medal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">torn bicep muscle<\/a>. Then, he helped the U.S. men\u2019s team secure its first team all-around Olympic gymnastics gold medal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usopm.org\/bart-conner\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/usopm.org\/bart-conner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in 80 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Conner married three-time gold-medal winner Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci \u2014 who dazzled the world at just 14 with <a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/en\/athletes\/nadia-comaneci\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/en\/athletes\/nadia-comaneci\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perfect 10s<\/a>\u00a0at the 1976 Montreal Olympics \u2014 in 1996. Together they run a gymnastics academy in Norman, Oklahoma.<\/p>\n<p>Conner and Comaneci were part of the Chicago delegation that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/image\/232971509\/?match=1&amp;terms=conner%20comaneci%20copenhagen\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/image\/232971509\/?match=1&amp;terms=conner%20comaneci%20copenhagen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">traveled to Copenhagen<\/a>\u00a0in 2009, to make an appeal before the International Olympic Committee to be the host city for the 2016 Summer Games.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"A look down the concourse of United Airlines' new terminal at O'Hare International Airport in August 1987. (Carl Hugare\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1987:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-uniteds-new-terminal-tu\/177938494\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Airlines terminal<\/a> opened at O\u2019Hare International Airport. The $540 million, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/05\/10\/helmut-jahns-chicago-legacy-photos-of-his-buildings-that-changed-the-city-and-beyond\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Helmut Jahn<\/a>-designed glass and aluminum complex included two buildings connected by an underground walkway featuring a 744-foot <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-paul-gapp-first-class-t\/177938365\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flashing neon sculpture<\/a>, galactic synthesizer music and moving sidewalks.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"hHiX3meS3q\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/09\/09\/ohare-international-airport-timeline-from-farm-to-global-terminal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">O\u2019Hare International Airport: From farm to global terminal<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The 85-acre facility \u2014 which would include 42 gates upon completion in December 1988 \u2014 also featured a $38 million, computerized baggage-handling system that could process 480 bags a minute.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Texas Rangers pitcher Nolan Ryan hits Robin Ventura of the Chicago White Sox after Ventura charged the mound, in Arlington, Texas on Aug. 4, 1993. (Linda Kaye\/AP)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1993:<\/strong> White Sox third baseman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2017\/08\/04\/aug-4-1993-the-robin-ventura-vs-nolan-ryan-fight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robin Ventura<\/a>, then 26, sprinted at 46-year-old Texas Rangers pitcher Nolan Ryan, who had just plunked Ventura in the right elbow with a fastball in the third inning.<\/p>\n<p>Ventura was incensed. He took Ryan\u2019s actions to be retaliation, plain and simple, for a series of incidents.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"oRUo7EzvDe\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2018\/08\/07\/yes-robin-ventura-remembers-that-one-sided-fight-with-nolan-ryan-and-he-can-laugh-about-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yes, Robin Ventura remembers that one-sided fight with Nolan Ryan. And he can laugh about it.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIf you know the game, it\u2019s no secret what he was doing,\u201d said Ventura, his elbow encased in an elastic brace. \u201cIf you don\u2019t think he did it on purpose, you don\u2019t know the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan put the 26-year-old Ventura in a headlock and started pummeling him.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Wyidcxi3sw\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/04\/11\/chicagos-history-with-hosting-democratic-and-republican-conventions-dates-back-to-1860\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago\u2019s history with hosting Democratic and Republican conventions dates back to 1860<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>1994:<\/strong> Chicago beat out San Antonio to host the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-quest-begins-for-convent\/177939307\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1996 Democratic National Convention<\/a>.
